2、rs.Bush,membersoftheEisenhower,Nixon,Johnson,KennedyandCarterfamilies;tothevastnumberofmembersofCongressandformermembersofCongresshere-Idontknowwheretheyarebecauseyoureallinponchos-(cheers)-buttheretheyare;theresahugegroupfromCongress,andthepresidentsentfourplanesdownandIthankhimforthat;toallthegues

5、verheardGeorgeW.BushgiveaspeechinIowa,andIcalledafriendofmineandIsaid:MyGod,thatguycanbeatus.Heisagoodpolitician.Hehasbeenverykindandgeneroustomyfamily,andIthankhimforthat. Todaywereallred,whiteandblue. IthankformerPresidentBushandMrs.Bushforcomingandfortheirservicetoournation.PresidentBush,Ilovedal
6、lthatstuffyousaid.ButIwanttothankyouforsomethingseriously.In1989,afterIhadbeengovernorforalongtime,youwerethepresidentwhofinallycalledustogetherandaskedustodevelopnationaleducationgoalsforAmericasothatallourchildrencouldgetagoodeducation.Itwasthebeginningofaseriousreformeffort,whichItriedtocarrythro
7、ughandwhichIknowPresidentBushhastriedtopush.Sothankyoufordoingthatandforgivingmetheopportunitytoworkwithyou. ThankyouPresidentandMrs.CarterforallyoudidintheWhiteHouseandallyouvedoneintheyearssincetomaketheworldmorejustandpeaceful.JohnQuincyAdamsoncesaid,Thereisnothinginlifesopatheticasaformerpreside

IrecentlyspokewithPresidentFord,who,at91,isunabletocomeand-withhisextraordinarywife,Betty.Buttheystillarestrong.YesterdayIreceivedawonderfulletterfromNancyReagan,whoremainsinourthoughtsandprayers.IthanktheFordsandNancyandthelatePre
10、sidentReaganfortheirservicetoourcountry. IwanttothankallthevastnumbersofCongressandformermemberswhoareherewhoservedwithme.Icouldnthavedonemostofthegoodthingswedidwithoutem,andtheyrenotresponsibleforanyofthemistakesImade. Icantseethroughalltheumbrellasandalltheponchosorwhateveryoucallthoseplasticthin
11、gsthatmakeyoualllooksobeautiful-(laughter)-butImprettysureSenatorKerrysoutthere.Andifheis,IwanttothankhimandImgladhesbackonthejob. LikeIsaid,Idowishmymotherwerehere.Shewouldhaveenjoyedseeingallofyou,evenintherain,andIpromiseyou-(helaughs)-youwouldhaveenjoyedseeingher. Mostofall,IwanttothankHillaryandChelsea.NowHillarysasenatorandshehasallth
14、epowerinourfamily,butshesprovingwhatIalwayssaid.Shehasthebestcombinationofmindandheart,convictionandcompassionIveeverencountered,thoughImustsayChelseaisgivinghermotheragoodrun.Chelsea,yourlifeandourloveforyougavemeaningtoourpublicservice.Theymadethepresidencythesecond-mostimportantjobIeverhad. Ilove
