4、onlyhappenswhenordinarypeoplegetinvolved,getengaged,andcometogethertodemandit.AftereightyearsasyourPresident,Istillbelievethat.Anditsnotjustmybelief.ItsthebeatingheartofourAmericanideaourboldexperimentinself-government.Itstheconvictionthatweareallcreatedequal,endowedbyourCreatorwithcertainunalienabl

5、erights,amongthemlife,liberty,andthepursuitofhappiness.Itstheinsistencethattheserights,whileself-evident,haveneverbeenself-executing;thatWe,thePeople,throughtheinstrumentofourdemocracy,canformamoreperfectunion.ThisisthegreatgiftourFoundersgaveus.Thefreedomtochaseourinpidualdreamsthroughoursweat,toil

6、,andimaginationandtheimperativetostrivetogetheraswell,toachieveagreatergood.For240years,ournationscalltocitizenshiphasgivenworkandpurposetoeachnewgeneration.Itswhatledpatriotstochooserepublicovertyranny,pioneerstotrekwest,slavestobravethatmakeshiftrailroadtofreedom.Itswhatpulledimmigrantsandrefugees

7、acrossoceansandtheRioGrande,pushedwomentoreachfortheballot,poweredworkerstoorganize.ItswhyGIsgavetheirlivesatOmahaBeachandIwoJima;IraqandAfghanistanandwhymenandwomenfromSelmatoStonewallwerepreparedtogivetheirsaswell.SothatswhatwemeanwhenwesayAmericaisexceptional.Notthatournationhasbeenflawlessfromth

8、estart,butthatwehaveshownthecapacitytochange,andmakelifebetterforthosewhofollow.Yes,ourprogresshasbeenuneven.Theworkofdemocracyhasalwaysbeenhard,contentiousandsometimesbloody.Foreverytwostepsforward,itoftenfeelswetakeonestepback.ButthelongsweepofAmericahasbeendefinedbyforwardmotion,aconstantwidening

9、ofourfoundingcreedtoembraceall,andnotjustsome.IfIhadtoldyoueightyearsagothatAmericawouldreverseagreatrecession,rebootourautoindustry,andunleashthelongeststretchofjobcreationinourhistoryifIhadtoldyouthatwewouldopenupanewchapterwiththeCubanpeople,shutdownIransnuclearweaponsprogramwithoutfiringashot,an

10、dtakeoutthemastermindof9/11ifIhadtoldyouthatwewouldwinmarriageequality,andsecuretherighttohealthinsuranceforanother20millionofourfellowcitizensyoumighthavesaidoursightsweresetalittletoohigh.Butthatswhatwedid.Thatswhatyoudid.Youwerethechange.Youansweredpeopleshopes,andbecauseofyou,byalmosteverymeasur

11、e,Americaisabetter,strongerplacethanitwaswhenwestarted.Intendays,theworldwillwitnessahallmarkofourdemocracy:thepeacefultransferofpowerfromonefreely-electedpresidenttothenext.IcommittedtoPresident-ElectTrumpthatmyadministrationwouldensurethesmoothestpossibletransition,justasPresidentBushdidforme.Beca

12、useitsuptoallofustomakesureourgovernmentcanhelpusmeetthemanychallengeswestillface.Wehavewhatweneedtodoso.Afterall,weremainthewealthiest,mostpowerful,andmostrespectednationonEarth.Ouryouthanddrive,ourpersityandopenness,ourboundlesscapacityforriskandreinventionmeanthatthefutureshouldbeours.Butthatpote

13、ntialwillberealizedonlyifourdemocracyworks.Onlyifourpoliticsreflectsthedecencyoftheourpeople.Onlyifallofus,regardlessofourpartyaffiliationorparticularinterest,helprestorethesenseofcommonpurposethatwesobadlyneedrightnow.ThatswhatIwanttofocusontonightthestateofourdemocracy.Understand,democracydoesnotr

14、equireuniformity.Ourfoundersquarreledandcompromised,andexpectedustodothesame.Buttheyknewthatdemocracydoesrequireabasicsenseofsolidaritytheideathatforallouroutwarddifferences,weareallinthistogether;thatweriseorfallasone.Therehavebeenmomentsthroughoutourhistorythatthreatenedtorupturethatsolidarity.The

15、beginningofthiscenturyhasbeenoneofthosetimes.Ashrinkingworld,growinginequality;demographicchangeandthespecterofterrorismtheseforceshaventjusttestedoursecurityandprosperity,butourdemocracyaswell.Andhowwemeetthesechallengestoourdemocracywilldetermineourabilitytoeducateourkids,andcreategoodjobs,andprot

16、ectourhomeland.Inotherwords,itwilldetermineourfuture.Ourdemocracywontworkwithoutasensethateveryonehaseconomicopportunity.Today,theeconomyisgrowingagain;wages,incomes,homevalues,andretirementaccountsarerisingagain;povertyisfallingagain.Thewealthyarepayingafairershareoftaxesevenasthestockmarketshattersrecords.Theunemploymentrateisnearaten-yearlow.Theuninsuredratehasnever,everbeenlower.Healthcarecostsarerisingattheslowe
