14、equireuniformity.Ourfoundersquarreledandcompromised,andexpectedustodothesame.Buttheyknewthatdemocracydoesrequireabasicsenseofsolidaritytheideathatforallouroutwarddifferences,weareallinthistogether;thatweriseorfallasone.Therehavebeenmomentsthroughoutourhistorythatthreatenedtorupturethatsolidarity.The
15、beginningofthiscenturyhasbeenoneofthosetimes.Ashrinkingworld,growinginequality;demographicchangeandthespecterofterrorismtheseforceshaventjusttestedoursecurityandprosperity,butourdemocracyaswell.Andhowwemeetthesechallengestoourdemocracywilldetermineourabilitytoeducateourkids,andcreategoodjobs,andprot
16、ectourhomeland.Inotherwords,itwilldetermineourfuture.Ourdemocracywontworkwithoutasensethateveryonehaseconomicopportunity.Today,theeconomyisgrowingagain;wages,incomes,homevalues,andretirementaccountsarerisingagain;povertyisfallingagain.Thewealthyarepayingafairershareoftaxesevenasthestockmarketshattersrecords.Theunemploymentrateisnearaten-yearlow.Theuninsuredratehasnever,everbeenlower.Healthcarecostsarerisingattheslowe
