Wecelebratethepast.WehavehonoredAmericasremarkableachievements,strugglesandtriumphsinthe20thcentury.Wecelebratethefuture,imagininganevenmoreremarkable21stcentury. Aswemarvela
2、tthechangesofthelast100years,wedreamofwhatchangesthenext100andthenext1,000willbring.Andaspowerfulasourmemoriesare,ourdreamsmustbeevenstronger.Forwhenourmemoriesoutweighourdreams,webecomeold.AnditistheeternaldestinyofAmericatoremainforeveryoung-alwaysreachingbeyond,alwaysbecoming,asourFounderspledged
3、,amoreperfectunion. SoweAmericansmustnotfearchange.Instead,letuswelcomeit,embraceitandcreateit. Thegreatstoryofthe20thcenturyisthetriumphoffreedomandfreepeople.Astorytoldinthedramaofnewimmigrants,thestrugglesforequalrights,thevictoriesovertotalitarianism,thestunningadvancesineconomicwell-beingandcul
4、tureandhealthandspaceandtelecommunicationsandinbuildingaworldinwhichmorethanhalfthepeopleliveundergovernmentsoftheirownchoosingforthefirsttimeinallhistory. Wemustneverforgetthemeaningofthe20thcenturyorthegiftsofthosewhoworkedandmarched,whofoughtanddiedforthetriumphoffreedom. Soasweringinthisnewyeari
5、nanewcentury,inanewmillennium,wemustnowandalwaysechoDr.King,inthewordsoftheoldAmericanhymn,Letfreedomring. Ifthestoryofthe20thcenturyisthetriumphoffreedom,whatwillthestoryofthe21stcenturybe Letitbethetriumphoffreedomwiselyusedtobringpeacetoaworldinwhichwehonorourdifferencesandevenmoreourcommonhumani
6、ty.Suchatriumphwillrequiregreateffortsfromusall. Andperhapsmostimportant,itwillrequireustosharewithourfellowAmericansand,increasingly,withourfellowcitizensof
8、theworld,theeconomicbenefitsofglobalization,thepoliticalbenefitsofdemocracyandhumanrights,theeducationalandhealthbenefitsofallthingsmodern,fromtheInternettothegeneticencyclopediatothemysteriesbeyondoursolarsystem. Now,wemaynotbeabletoeliminateallhatefulintolerance,butwecandevelopahealthyintoleranceo
9、fbigotry,oppressionandabjectpoverty. Wemaynotbeabletoeliminatealltheharshconsequencesofglobalization.Butwecancommunicatemoreandtravelmoreandtrademoreinawaythatliftsthelivesofordinaryworkingfamilieseverywhereandthequalityofourglobalenvironment. Wemaynotbeabletoeliminateallthefailuresofgovernmentandin
10、ternationalinstitutions.Butwecancertainlystrengthendemocracysoallchildrenarepreparedforthe21stcenturyworldandprotectedfromitsharshestsideeffects. Andwecandosomuchmoretoworktogether,tocooperateamongourselves,toseizetheproblemsandtheopportunitiesofthisever-smallplanetweallcallhome. Inshort,ifwewantthe
11、storyofthe21stcenturytobethetriumphofpeaceandharmony,wemustembraceourcommonhumanityandourshareddestiny. Now,werejustmomentsfromthatnewmillennium. Twocenturiesago,astheFramerswerecraftingourConstitution,BenjaminFranklinwasoftenseeninIndependenceHall,lookingatapaintingofthesunlowonthehorizon.Whenatlon
12、glasttheConstitutionfinallywassigned,Mr.Franklinsaid,Ihaveoftenwonderedwhetherthatsunwasrisingorsetting.Today,Ihavethehappinesstoknowitisarisingsun.
