6、tion of wood pallets.According to statistics gathered by the NationalWooden Pallet and Container Association of Arlington,Virginia,hundreds of millions of woodpallets were manufactured in the United States during each of the past 30 years.In the lightof this and to prevent serious problems in the ha
7、ndling,storing,and transporting unit loadswithin the U.S.A.as well as the international trade,it became imperative that prescriptive aswell as performance standards for new and repaired.captive and exchange,wood pallets beestablished.With this in mind,The Pallet Association prepared and published a
8、Uniform VoluntaryStandard for Wood Palletsduring 1994,to establish minimum quality requirements for themost common classes,types,and styles of wood pallets made of lumber of any wood speciescommercially available and suitable for this purpose.That Standard served as a basis for thisAmerican National
9、 Standard for Wood Pallets.To establish standard specifications and guidelines for pallets and other bases for unit loads,the American National Standards Institute(formerly,the American Standards Association)pro-ject on pallet standardization was initiated during October,1953.A Materials Handling St
10、an-dards Committee,MHI(initially,B69),was organized to coordinate information and preparestandards under the scope of standardization of nomenclature,types,sizes,materials,and com-ponents of pallets used in the unit-load method of assembling,stacking,storing,handling,andtransporting materials and pr
11、oducts.The standards were to accomplish the following:(a)define terminology associated with pallets;(b)apply to pallets irrespective of components used in their fabrication:(c)provide a series of recommended pallet dimensions;(d)describe proccdures for pallet testing:and(e)indicate proccdures for de
12、signating pallet requirements.During 1967,the MIll Committee was reorganized.A Nominating Committee was estab-lished in compliance with the procedures of ANSI.The Nominating Committee selected officersfor the MHI Committee during 1968 and,in tum,became the nucleus for the new MHiExecutive Committee
13、to guide the continuing revision activities and organize the task groupsto be formed.Five subcommittees were organized:(u)Advisory Liuison-to provide an effective two-way information flow between the MHIPallet Standards Committees,related ANSI standards committees.and other concemed orga-nizations;(
14、b)Definirions-to prepare definitions of pallet terms.as outlined in the Style Manual forAmerican National Standards.and prepare for publication all standards developed under theprocedures of ANSI by the ASME Standards Committee MH:(c)Sizes-to define the minimum number of pallet sizes that provide the maximum ofefficiency.economy.interchangeability.and adaptability when used in all types of rail,high-way.and waterborne transports in the U.S.:(d)Testing-to assemble information on.submit recommendations for,and develop testprocedures:ii
