10、cimen is abraded using rotary rubbing action undercontrolled conditions of pressure and abrasive action.The testspecimen,mounted on a turntable platform,turns on a verticalaxis,against the sliding rotation of two abrading wheels.Oneabrading wheel rubs the specimen outward toward the periph-ery and t
11、he other,inward toward the center,while a vacuumsystem removes wear debris generated during the test.Theresulting abrasion marks form a pattern of crossed arcs over anarea of approximately 30 cm2.Resistance to abrasion isevaluated by visual inspection of damage to the specimen orchange in mass,as de
12、scribed in Section 14.5.Significance and Use5.1 The resistance of leather to abrasion,as measured on atesting machine in the laboratory,is generally only one ofseveral factors contributing to wear performance or durabilityas experienced in the actual use of the material.While“abrasion resistance”(of
13、ten stated in terms of the number ofabrasion cycles)and“durability”are frequently related,therelationship varies with different end uses and different factorsmay be necessary in any calculation of predicted durability1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D31 on Leatherand is
