3、covers the determination of the resis-tance of plastics to surface marring caused by falling abrasiveparticles.Materials such as films,molded,or laminated plasticsmay be evaluated.1.2 A surface to be tested should be relatively flat andsmooth;the damage done by a falling object is a function of thea

4、ngle at which it strikes.Since deterioration is usually mea-sured optically,the material evaluated is normally of highinitial gloss or low initial haze.1.3 In other than flat form,materials may be comparedvisually.Care must be exercised to use the same shape ofspecimen throughout and to have the abr

8、ace of thetest specimen.Increasing amounts of abrasive material aredropped from a fixed height.3.2 The change in gloss produced by the abrasive actionmay be determined optically for plastics with high initial gloss.The haze of abraded transparent materials is measured andcompared with the haze origi

9、nally present.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method provides a relatively mild particle-impingement type of abrasive action where hard sharp particlesimpact and tumble along a materials surface creating a groupof gouges or pits.There is usually an accompanying loss ofwear debris from the sample

10、.The test best simulates situationswhere airborne particulates abrade a materials surface duringactual use.Different materials may be ranked in terms of theirrelative resistance over a range of test severities.4.2 For many materials,there may be a specification thatrequires the use of this test meth

11、od,but with some proceduralmodifications that take precedence when adhering to thespecification.Therefore,it is advisable to refer to that materialspecification before using this test method.Table 1 of Classi-fication D 4000 lists the ASTM materials standards that cur-rently exist.5.Apparatus55.1 Ab
