3、e datadesirable to describe a groundwater data collection or samplingsite.This guide identifies usage descriptors,such asmonitoring,for an individual groundwater site.Guide D5408describes additional information beyond the minimum set ofdata elements that may be specified to identify a groundwatersit

4、e,while Guide D5409 identifies physical descriptors,such asconstruction,for a site.NOTE1A groundwater site is defined as any source,location,orsampling station capable of producing water or hydrologic data from anatural stratum from below the surface of the earth.A source or facilitycan include a we

5、ll,spring or seep,and drain or tunnel(nearly horizontalin orientation).Other sources,such as excavations,driven devices,boreholes,ponds,lakes,and sinkholes,that can be shown to be hydrau-lically connected to the groundwater,are appropriate for the use intended.NOTE2Guide D5408 includes data confiden

8、,and spring descriptors(11 data elements).For a list ofdescriptors in this guide,see Section 3.1.2 These data elements are described in terms used bygroundwater hydrologists.Standard references,such as Ref(1)2and various hydrogeologic professional publications,areused to determine these definitions.

9、Many of the suggestedelements and their representative codes are those establishedby the Water Resources Division of the U.S.Geological Surveyand used in the National Water Information Systems comput-erized data base3(1-21).NOTE3The purpose of this guide is to suggest data elements that canbe collec

10、ted for groundwater sites.This does not uniquely imply acomputer data base,but rather data elements for entry into any type ofpermanent file.NOTE4Component and code lists given with some of the dataelements,for example“method of discharge measurement,”are onlysuggestions.These lists can be modified,

11、expanded,or reduced for thepurpose intended by the company or agency maintaining the groundwaterdata file.NOTE5Use of trade names in this guide is for identification purposesonly and does not constitute endorsement by ASTM.1.3 This guide includes the data elements desirable todocument a groundwater

12、site beyond those given in theminimum set of data elements.Some examples of the dataelements are water level,discharge,and water-quality samplecollection date.No single site will need every data element,forexample,a monitoring site may not need a long-term water userecord.Each record(group of data e
