8、o be analyzed is ashed under standardconditions and ignited to constant weight.Two solutions areprepared from the ash.SolutionAis obtained by fusing the ashwith sodium hydroxide(NaOH)followed by a final dissolutionof the melt in dilute hydrochloric acid(HCl).Solution B isprepared by decomposition of

9、 the ash with sulfuric(H2SO4),hydrofluoric(HF),and nitric(HNO3)acids.Solution A is usedfor the analysis of SiO2and Al2O3,and Solution B for theremaining elements.3.2 The two solutions are analyzed by a combination ofmethods:(1)spectrophotometric procedures are used for SiO2,Al2O3,Fe2O3,TiO2,and P2O5

10、;(2)chelatometric titration forCaO and MgO;and(3)flame photometry for Na2O and K2O.See Fig.1 for a general outline of the methods and proceduresused for each determination.4.Significance and Use4.1 Acompositional analysis of the ash is often useful in thetotal coal quality description.Knowledge of t

11、he ash composi-tion is also useful in predicting the behavior of the ashes andslags in combustion chambers.Utilization of the coal combus-tion ash by-products sometimes depends on the chemicalcomposition of the ash.4.2 It should be noted that chemical composition of labora-tory prepared coal ash may

12、 not exactly represent the compo-sition of mineral matter in the coal,or the composition of thefly ash and slags resulting from the commercial scale burningof the coal.5.Apparatus5.1 Balance,sensitive to 0.1 mg.5.2 CruciblesNickel crucibles of 50-cm3capacity shall beused for NaOH fusion of the ash,a

13、nd platinum crucibles of30-cm3capacity shall be used for decomposition of the ashwith HF.5.3 Emission Flame Photometer.5.4 Muffle FurnaceElectrically heated muffle furnacewith good air circulation and capable of maintaining a tem-perature of approximately 750C.1These test methods are under the juris

16、.standard.6.Purity of Reagents and Materials6.1 Purity of ReagentsReagent grade chemicals shall beused in all tests.Unless otherwise indicated,it is intended thatall reagents shall conform to the specifications of the Commit-tee on Analytical Reagents of the American Chemical Society,where such specifications are available.5Other grades may beused,provided it is first ascertained that the reagent is ofsufficiently high purity to permit its use without lessening theaccuracy of the determination.6
