6、imulate natural cut stone.4.Significance and Use4.1 This test method is to be used in determining theabsorption of cast stone.Absorption is one measure of porosityof cast stone and,hence,its resistance to weathering andstructural stress.5.Sampling5.1 Select the sample to represent the cast stone und
7、erconsideration.The sample may be randomly selected by thepurchaser or his authorized representative from each 500 ft3(14 m3)of cast stone.Select a sample of adequate size topermit the preparation of three absorption test specimens.6.Test Specimens6.1 For absorption tests take three specimens from t
8、hesample.Cut specimens from the finished surface of the sampleto consist of one surface intended to be exposed to view andfive saw-cut surfaces,except that for faced cast stone,cut thespecimens through the faced surface to consist of approxi-mately equal parts of the facing material and the backupma
9、terial.6.2 Cut specimens from the sample with saws.The testspecimens shall be 2-in.(50.8-mm)or 50-mm cubes.Theallowable size tolerance of the cubes shall be 618in.(3.2 mm).7.Conditioning7.1 For this test,oven dry specimens at a temperature of 212to 230F(100 to 110C)until the loss in mass is not more
10、 than0.1%in 24 h of drying.Remove specimens from the oven andallow to cool in room temperature to a final temperature of 68to 77F(20 to 25C)before testing for absorption.8.Procedure8.1 Weigh the specimens immediately after conditioningand determine the mass to the nearest 0.1 g.8.2 Method A,Cold Wat
11、er TestImmerse the specimenscompletely in filtered or distilled water at 73.4 6 3F(2361.7C)for 48 h.At the end of this period,remove them fromthe water bath one at a time,surface dry with a damp cloth,anddetermine the mass to the nearest 0.1 g.8.3 Method B,Boiling Water TestImmerse the specimenscomp
12、letely in cold filtered or distilled water for 48 h and thenimmerse in boiling water at 2126 9F(100 6 5C)for 5 h.Allow the specimens to cool to a final temperature of 68 to77F(20 to 25C),surface dry,and weigh to the nearest 0.1 g.9.Calculations9.1 Calculate the absorption of each specimen as follows
