3、1 This practice covers procedures for safe handling ofsolvent cements,primers,and cleaners used in joining thermo-plastic pipe and fittings.The procedures are general ones andinclude safeguards against hazards of fire and precautions forprotection of personnel from breathing of vapors and contactwit

7、tic pipe and fittings.3.2.2 primeran organic solvent,or blend of solvents,which enhances adhesion,applied to plastic pipe and fittingsprior to application of a solvent cement.3.2.3solvent cementan adhesive made by dissolving aplastic resin or compound in a suitable solvent or mixture ofsolvents.The
8、solvent cement dissolves the surfaces of the pipeand fittings to form a bond between the mating surfacesprovided the proper cement is used for the particular materialsand proper techniques are followed.4.Safe Handling4.1 Anumber of the solvents contained in cements,primers,and cleaners are classifie
9、d as airborne contaminants andflammable and combustible liquids.These products generallyare composed of solvent blends which vary with manufactur-ers.Follow precautions given herein to prevent fire and injuryto personnel.Specific safety information on a particularcement,primer,or cleaner may be foun
10、d on the container labelor in the Material Safety Data Sheet available from themanufacturer.4.2 Avoid prolonged breathing of solvent vapors.Whenpipe and fittings are being joined in partially enclosed areas,use a ventilating device in such a manner as to maintain a safelevel of vapor concentration w
11、ith respect to toxicity4,5andflammability6in the breathing area.Select ventilating devicesand locate them so as not to provide a source of ignition toflammable vapor mixtures.4.3 Keep cements,primers,and cleaners away from allsources of ignition,heat,sparks,and open flame.64.4 Keep containers of cem
12、ents,primers,and cleanerstightly closed except when the product is being used.Thecontainer type shall be in accordance with CFR Title 49.Container labeling shall conform with the requirements of theFederal Hazardous Substance Act and OSHA Hazard Commu-nication Act.1This practice is under the jurisdi
