1、21INTERNATIONAL TALENT国际人才交流20233早就想写写柯马凯,因为他是外国专家中的名人。2017年我调到国家外国专家局工作,最初听到同事们说得最多的外国专家名字中就有柯马凯。他们说他的时候,那感觉不像在说一个外国人就是 中 国 人 或 者 自 己 的 同 事 和朋友。但是,我和柯马凯真正的见面却是大概在一年半以后。2018年12月,在北京外国语大学举行的伊莎白柯鲁克教授103岁生日会上,我见到了柯马凯。虽然在那个热闹的场合里,我没有和他打招呼,然而会上播放的视频里讲述的他们全家的故事,却让我几次流下眼泪。全家与中国命运与共,父亲在狱中读完毛泽东选集柯马凯是一位名人,其实比
2、他更有名的是他的父母大卫柯鲁克和伊莎白柯鲁克。特别是他的母亲伊莎白柯鲁克,1915年12月生,加拿大籍,北京外国语大学终身荣誉教授,是1980年国务院批准认定的第一批“外国老专家”,也是中华人民共和国“友谊勋章”获得者。记得我来国际人才交流杂志工作的时候,我的同事总是把“外国老专家”挂在嘴上。我在审稿的时候,就对这个“老”字费解。我的同事告诉我,“老”是一个荣誉,现在称得上外国老专家的并不多了。后来,我认识了伊莎白的“中国孙女”傅涵女士,并且请她多写写伊莎白和她身边其他的外国友人。从最开始以“不擅长写作”为由推辞,到后来不仅写了很多,还拍了自己的处女作纪录片西方女人类学家的中国I have b
3、een thinking of writing about Michael Crook for a long time,as he is well-known among foreign experts in China.When I joined State Administration of Foreign Experts of China (SAFE)in 2017,one of the foreign experts I heard about most often from my col-leagues was Michael Crook.When they talked about
4、 him,it sounded as if they were talking about a Chinese person or their colleague or friend rather than a foreigner.I met with Michael in person only one year and a half later.It was in December 2018,at the birthday party of 103-year-old Professor Isabel Crook(Michaels mother)at Beijing Foreign Stud
5、ies University.I didnt get to greet him on that cheerful occasion,but the video telling the sto-ries of the Crook family at the party brought tears to my eyes several times.The Crook family shared the fate of China and Michaels father read through the complete Selected Works of Mao Zedong in prisonM
6、ichael is a celebrity,but his parents,David Crook and Isabel Crook en-joyed greater fame than him.In particular,Isabel Crook,Candian,born in December 1915,is Emeritus Professor at Beijing Foreign Studies Uni-versity,one of the first Senior Foreign Experts approved by Chinas State Council in 1980,and
7、 a laureate of the Friendship Medal of the Peoples Republic of China(2019).When I came to work for the magazine International Talent,my colleagues were always talking about Waiguo Lao Zhuanjia(literally“old foreign ex-pert”).When I reviewed the articles,I was puzzled by the word Lao(lit-erally“old”)
8、.My colleague told me that Lao expresses respect and honor,and only a few are honored as Waiguo Lao Zhuanjia.Later,I met Ms.FU Han,Isabels“Chinese granddaughter,”and invited her to write about Isabel and other foreign friends around her.Initially,she excused herself by saying that she was“not good a
9、t writing.”How-ever,it turned out that she wrote a lot and even produced her first docu-mentary Isabel Crook:Childhood Memories from Bailuding.This video shown at Professor Isabels 103rd birthday celebration moved me deeply.To tell the stories of Michael,I have to start with the stories of his paren
10、ts.In 1915,the fourth year of the Republic of China,the Japanese govern-柯马凯:也用一生爱中国文/徐庆群 译/申鹏远Michael Crook:Love China All My Life22封面故事COVER STORY记忆伊莎白白鹿顶。正是在伊莎白教授103岁生日会上,我被傅涵的纪录片深深震撼。因此,写柯马凯,我一定要先讲讲他父母的故事。1915年,民国四年。日本向袁世凯递交“二十一条”,陈独秀创办青年杂志。伊莎白在成都四圣祠教堂对面的房子里出生了,伊莎白的父母是加拿大传教士,他们为她取了个中文名字饶淑梅,希望她善良淑
11、美,顽强如梅。后来,伊莎白(饶淑梅)用一生的时间从事人类学研究,我想与她的童年有关。“我的父母从事教育工作,所以他们特别注重解放孩子的天性”。每年夏天,为躲避成都夏日的酷暑,伊莎白一家都会来到距成都70公里的彭州市白鹿顶度假“白鹿渺渺随仙惟古镇鹃啼依稀蜀韵,丹花盈盈语客有教堂诗唱仿佛欧风。”就是在流沙河笔下的白鹿顶,伊莎白开始了与中国乡村不解的世纪情缘。为了让女儿接受更好的教育,1928年,父母把伊莎白送回加拿大念书。10年后,伊莎白从多伦多大学硕士毕业后回到成都。时年23岁的伊莎白,正是青春曼妙的年纪,她却开始走向藏区做社会调查。抗战时期,为研究如何开展乡村建设,改善农民生活,25岁的伊莎白
12、和26岁的俞锡玑开始了探索乡村社会实践,对四川省璧山县兴隆场的1500户人家开始了挨家挨户的田野调查。2013年,这部社会人类学历史上首部由西方与东方女人类学者合作完成的巨著战争时期中国农村的身份、变革和抵拒兴隆场出版,这份珍贵的手记细腻、翔实地记录了抗战时大后方的大量日常生活细节,堪称社会人类学以及民国史、乡建运动史的必读之作。1940年,志同道合的伊莎白与大卫柯鲁克相识相恋。他们经常相约骑游,总有聊不完的话题。他们始终关注、同情社会的底层,从战乱的西班牙到沦陷的上海,从白鹿镇周边的贫穷山民到杂谷脑河畔的农奴,他们都怀有悲悯之心。因为早在1937年,在西班牙内战中负伤的大卫柯鲁克在白求恩所在
13、的医院养伤,期间读到了斯诺的红星照耀中国。因此,1941年暑假他们相约来到红星照耀中国里ment presented the“Twenty-one Demands”(claims made by Japan for special privileges in China)to Yuan Shikai(then President of the Republic of China)and Chen Duxiu(who later became leader of Communist Party of China in its earlier days)launched the magazine
14、La Jeunesse.Isabels parents were Cana-dian missionaries.In the same year,Isabel was born in a house opposite the Canadian Methodist Church in Chengdu,and her parents gave her a Chinese name,RAO Shumei,hoping she would be kind,beautiful and as brave as plum blossoms in bitter winter.Later,Isabel(RAO
15、Shumei)devoted much of her life to anthropological re-search,which I think has something to do with her childhood experiences.“My parents devoted themselves to education,so they valued the liberation of their childrens nature,”said Michael.Each summer,to escape the oppre-sive heat of Chengdu,Isabels
16、 family would spend the summer at Bailuding in Pengzhou,70 kilometres from Chengdu.“In Bailuding,one may appreciate the ancient Sichuan charms in the warble of birds on top of peaks,and also enjoy the hymns from European-style church amid beautiful flowers,”wrote LIU Shahe,a Chinese poet.It is in the picturesque Bailuding that Isabel started her centu-ry-long research of Chinas rural society.To provide their daughter with a better education,Isabels parents sent her back to Canada to study in 192
