Today,agenerationraisedintheshadowsoftheColdWarassumesnewresponsibilitiesinaworldwar
4、medbythesunshineoffreedom,butthreatenedstillbyancienthatredsandnewplagues.Raisedinunrivalledprosperity,weinheritaneconomythatisstilltheworldsstrongest,butisweakenedbybusinessfailures,stagnantwages,increasinginequality,anddeepdivisionsamongourownpeople. WhenGeorgeWashingtonfirsttooktheoathIhavejustsw
5、orntouphold,newstravelledslowlyacrossthelandbyhorseback,municationsandcommerceareglobal.Investmentismobile.Technologyisalmostmagical,andambitionforabetterlifeisnowuniversal. WeearnourlivelihoodinAmericatodayinpeacefulcompetitionwithpeopleallacrosstheEarth.Profoundandpowerfulforcesareshakingandremaki
6、ngourworld,andtheurgentquestionofourtimeiswhetherwecanmakechangeourfriendandnotourenemy.ThisnewworldhasalreadyenrichedthelivesofmillionsofAmericanswhoareabletocompeteandwininit.Butwhenmostpeopleareworkingharderforless,whenotherscannotworkatall,whenthecostofhealthcaredevastatesfamiliesandthreatenstob
7、ankruptourenterprises,greatandsmall;whenthefearofcrimerobslawabidingcitizensoftheirfreedom;andwhenmillionsofpoorchildrencannotevenimaginetheliveswearecallingthemtolead,wehavenotmadechangeourfriend. Weknowwehavetofacehardtruthsandtakestrongsteps,butwehavenotdoneso.Insteadwehavedrifted,andthatdrifting
8、haserodedourresources,fracturedoureconomy,andshakenourconfidence.Thoughourchallengesarefearsome,soareourstrengths.Americanshaveeverbeenarestless,questing,hopefulpeople,andwemustbringtoourtasktodaythevisionandwillofthosewhocamebeforeus.FromourRevolutiontotheCivilWar,totheGreatDepression,totheCivilRig
9、htsmovement,ourpeoplehavealwaysmusteredthedeterminationtoconstructfromthesecrisesthepillarsofourhistory.ThomasJeffersonbelievedthattopreservetheveryfoundationsofournationwewouldneeddramaticchangefromtimetotime.Well,myfellowAmericans,thisisourtime.Letusembraceit. Ourdemocracymustbenotonlytheenvyofthe
10、worldbuttheengineofourownrenewal.ThereisnothingwrongwithAmericathatcannotbecuredbywhatisrightwithAmerica. Andsotodaywepledgeanendtotheeraofdeadlockanddrift,andanewseasonofAmericanrenewalhasbegun. TorenewAmericawemustbebold.Wemustdowhatnogenerationhashadtodobefore.Wemustinvestmoreinourownpeople,inthe
11、irjobs,andintheirfuture,andatthesametimecutourmassivedebt.andwemustdosoinaworldinwhichwemustcompeteforeveryopportunity.Itwillnotbeeasy.Itwillrequiresacrifice,butitcanbedone,anddonefairly.Notchoosingsacrificeforitsownsake,butforourownsake.Wemustprovideforournationthewayafamilyprovidesforitschildren.
