8、 retained on thesieve are often caused by agglomeration of the dispersed phase.Storage,pumping,handling,and temperature can all contributeto the formation of particles.Contamination from the tank,transport,or hose are other factors affecting particle formation.NOTE1The quality of the results produce
9、d by this standard aredependent on the competence of the personnel performing the procedureand the capability,calibration,and maintenance of the equipment used.Agencies that meet the criteria of Specification D3666 are generallyconsidered capable of competent and objective testing,sampling,inspectio
10、n,etc.Users of this standard are cautioned that compliance withSpecification D3666 alone does not completely ensure reliable results.Reliable results depend on many factors;following the suggestions ofSpecification D3666 or some similar acceptable guideline provides ameans of evaluating and controll
11、ing some of those factors.4.Sample Conditioning for Testing4.1 All emulsified asphalts shall be properly stirred toachieve homogeneity before testing.4.2 All emulsified asphalts with viscosity testing require-ments of 50 C shall be heated to 50 6 3 C in the originalsample container in a water bath o
12、r oven.The container shouldbe vented to relieve pressure.After the sample reaches 50 63 C,stir the sample to achieve homogeneity.4.3 Emulsified asphalts with viscosity testing requirementsof 25 C should be mixed or stirred at 25 6 3 C in the originalsample container to achieve homogeneity.NOTE2Emuls
13、ified asphalts with viscosity testing requirements of25 C may be heated and stirred as specified in 4.2,if necessary.In theevent the 4.2 method is used,the sample should be cooled to 25 6 3 Cbefore testing.5.Apparatus and Reagents5.1 SieveA sieve having a nominal 76-mm frame con-forming to Specifica
14、tion E11,and having a 850-m wire sievecloth.5.2 PanA tin box cover or shallow metal pan of appro-priate size to fit over the bottom of the standard sieve.5.3 Thermometric DeviceASTM 17C for tests at 25 Cand ASTM 19C for tests at 50 C,conforming to the require-ments of Specification E1,or any other t
