3、on perpendicular to thecylindrical axis by means of the Marshall apparatus.This testmethod is for use with dense graded asphalt mixtures preparedwith asphalt cement(modified and unmodified),cutbackasphalt,tar,and tar-rubber with maximum size aggregate up to1 in.(25 mm)in size(passing 1 in.(25 mm)sie

9、nding each constituent then compacting theblended mixture using a laboratory compaction apparatus.3.1.1.1 DiscussionLMLC typically occurs during the as-phalt mixture design phase.Laboratory compaction devicessuch as the Superpave Gyratory Compactor,Marshall Hammer,or other laboratory compaction devi

10、ces may be used.3.1.2 plant mix laboratory compacted(PMLC)asphaltmixture,nasphalt mixture samples that are manufactured in aproduction plant,sampled prior to compaction,then immedi-ately compacted using a laboratory compaction apparatus.3.1.2.1 DiscussionPMLC specimens are often used forquality cont

11、rol testing.The asphalt mixture is not permitted tocool substantially and it may be necessary to place the mixturein a laboratory oven to equilibrate the mixture to the compac-tion temperature before molding.Laboratory compaction de-vices such as the Superpave Gyratory Compactor,MarshallHammer,or ot

12、her laboratory compaction devices may be used.3.1.3 reheated plant mix lab compacted(RPMLC)asphaltmixture,nasphalt mixture samples that are manufactured in aproduction plant,sampled prior to compaction,allowed to coolto room temperature,then reheated in a laboratory oven andcompacted using a laborat

13、ory compaction apparatus.3.1.3.1 DiscussionRPMLC are often used for qualityacceptance and verification testing.The reheating time shouldbe as short as possible to obtain uniform temperature to avoidartificially aging the specimens.Asphalt mixture conditioning,reheat temperature,and reheat time shoul
