7、ng left in the drum.This test method is anattempt to evaluate the degree of settling caused by theaccelerated Test Method D1309.This very subjective methodof evaluation in conjunction with the variables of Test MethodD1309 raises questions as to the usefulness of the results forspecification complia

8、nce.4.Apparatus4.1 Container,standard 500-mL(1-pt)friction-top can paintcontainer,85.5 6 1.5 mm(3386116in.)in diameter,and 98.56 1.5 mm(3786116in.)in height.4.2 Spatula,stainless-steel blade with a handle with a127 mm(5 in.)long blade and approximately 20 mm(1316in.)in width.Approximately 2 mm of th

9、e end shall be cut off suchthat the end is square.For comparative testing it is recom-mended to use the indicated spatula parameters as variancesmay show different results.Other specifications may be accept-able and should be decided on between purchaser and seller.5.Procedure5.1 Place the specimen

10、to be tested for pigment suspensionin a 500-mL(1-pt)container,filling the can to within 13 mm(12in.)of the top.Close the can tightly and hold undisturbedfor shelf aging for 6 months or for such other periods of timeagreed upon between the purchaser and the seller.5.2 Open the can holding the shelf-a

11、ged sample withoutshaking or agitation,and examine the sample without removalof supernatant vehicle.Use the spatula to determine the extentand character of portions of the paint that may have separatedduring storage.Hold the spatula perpendicular to and in thecenter area of the paint at a height whe

12、reby the bottom edge ofthe spatula is level with the top of the can.Drop the spatulafrom that position.Rate the condition of the sample inaccordance with 5.4.5.3 After examination of the entire specimen as described in5.2,if a portion of the pigment has separated out to form a firmcake at the bottom

13、 of the container pour the supernatant portionof the liquid off into a clean container and hold for subsequentuse.Reincorporate the separate cake by hand stirring with thespatula,adding back the liquid in small amounts until thepigment has been reincorporated to form a homogeneous paintsuitable for

14、the intended use or until it is determined that thepigment cake cannot be reincorporated by hand stirring.Ratethe condition of the specimen in accordance with 5.4.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D01 on Paintand Related Coatings,Materials,and Applications and is the dire
