10、eight in relation to other dimensions.Mattresses have smallermesh openings than the mesh used for gabions.4.Summary of Practice4.1 The designer shall establish the suitable sizes,weight,and quality of rock for project use,and examine sources toensure that the required rock is available.4.2 Rock shal
11、l be delivered to the work site in a manner tominimize its reduction in sizes(breakdown)during the han-dling of the rock,and then placed and secured within theassembled and interconnected gabion or mattress.NOTE1Clean crushed concrete may be used as an alternative whenrock is not available.5.Signifi
12、cance and Use5.1 Gabions and mattresses,described in SpecificationsA974 and A975,are placed on sites for soil stabilization and toprevent soil erosion.Their ability to function properly dependson their stability,which is partly dependent upon the rocksfilling them.Rock sizes should be chosen to prev
13、ent individualrocks from falling through the mesh of the gabions or mat-tresses.The rock also has to withstand natural weatheringprocesses during the life of the project that would cause it tobreakdown to sizes smaller than the wire mesh openingdimensions.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of
