2、icates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscriptepsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers four grades of red pigmentcommercially known as red lead.The pigment may be pur-chased in the dry form or as a paste in oil.1.2 The values

4、Methods for Coarse Particles in PigmentsD1208 Test Methods for Common Properties of CertainPigments3.Composition and Properties3.1 Dry PigmentThe pigment shall be made by roastinglitharge or metallic lead,or compounds of lead that yieldlitharge by heating,and shall consist entirely of oxides of lead

5、,free of adulterants.The four grades of pigment shall conformto the following requirements:True red lead(Pb3O4),min,%:85%grade8595%grade9597%grade9798%grade98Total impurities including moisture,water solublematter,and matter insoluble in a mixture ofnitric acid and hydrogen peroxide,max,%1.0Lead mon

6、oxide,PbOremainderCoarse particles(total residue retained on a 45-m(No.325)sieve),max,%1.0When mixed as indicated in the following table,the resultingpaint,brushed on a smooth vertical iron surface,shall dry hardand elastic without running,streaking,or sagging:Dry red lead20 lb(9.1 kg)Raw linseed oi

7、l5 pt(2.4 L)Turpentine2 gills(0.24 L)Liquid drier2 gills(0.24 L)3.2 Paste in OilThe paste shall be made by thoroughlygrinding the specified pigment with linseed oil(Note 1).Thepaste as shipped by the seller,and for three months thereafter,shall not be caked in the container,and shall break up readil

8、yin oil to form a smooth paint of brushing consistency.The pasteshall conform to the following requirements:Pigment,%92 to 94Linseed oil,%6.0 to 8.0Moisture and other volatile matter,max,%0.5Coarse particles and skins(total residue retained ona No.325(45-m)sieve),max,%of the dry pigment1.5When mixed

10、 in places of high temperatureshould be avoided,as heat accelerates the tendency of this material to cakeor harden.Purchasers are cautioned that 85%grade red lead should not bebought in paste form.The 95%grade,if made into paste,should be usedwithin a short period of time after grinding.When pure re

11、d lead paste isto be stored for a considerable period of time,the 97%or 98%grade ofred lead should be specified.Therefore the manufacturer shall identify thegrade of red lead used in the paste and the date of manufacture.4.Sampling4.1 Two samples shall be taken at random from differentpackages from

12、each lot,batch,days pack,or other unit ofproduction in a shipment.When no markings distinguishingbetween units of production appear,samples shall be takenfrom different packages in the ratio of two samples for each10 000 lb(5000 kg),except that for shipments of less than10 000 lb two samples shall b

13、e taken.At the option of thepurchaser,the samples may be tested separately or afterblending in equal quantities the samples from the productionunit to form a composite sample.5.Test Methods5.1 Tests shall be conducted in accordance with the follow-ingASTM test methods.Test procedures not covered byA
