3、red to as boreholes)ascommonly applied to geologic,engineering,groundwater,andenvironmental(hereafter referred to as geotechnical)investi-gations.Caliper logging for mineral or petroleum explorationand development are excluded.1.1.1 This guide offers an organized collection of informa-tion or a seri

4、es of options and does not recommend a specificcourse of action.This document cannot replace education orexperience and should be used in conjunction with professionaljudgment.Not all aspects of this guide may be applicable in allcircumstances.This ASTM standard is not intended to repre-sent or repl

5、ace the standard of care by which the adequacy ofa given professional service must be judged,nor should thisdocument be applied without consideration of a projects manyunique aspects.The word“Standard”in the title of thisdocument means only that the document has been approvedthrough the ASTM consens

6、us process.1.2 This guide defines a caliper log as a record of boreholediameter with depth.1.2.1 Caliper logs are essential in the interpretation ofgeophysical logs since geophysical results can be significantlyaffected by borehole diameter.1.2.2 Caliper logs provide useful information for boreholec

7、ompletion and testing and are commonly used to assessborehole diameter,shape,roughness,and stability;calculateborehole volume;provide information on borehole construc-tion;and delineate lithologic contacts,fractures,and solutioncavities and other openings.1.2.2.1 Borehole-diameter information is ess

8、ential for cal-culation of volumetric rate from flowmeter logs.1.2.2.2 Caliper logs are used to locate the optimum place-ment of inflatable packers for borehole testing.Inflatablepackers can only form an effective seal within a specified rangeof borehole diameters,and can be damaged if they are set

9、inrough or irregular parts of the borehole.1.2.2.3 Caliper logs are used to estimate the volume ofborehole completion material(cement,gravel,etc.)needed tofill the annular space between borehole and casing(s)or wellscreen.1.2.2.4 Caliper logs may be applied to correlate lithologybetween boreholes ba

10、sed upon enlargements related to lithol-ogy.The measured borehole diameter may be significantlydifferent than the drilled diameter because of plastic formationsexpanded into the borehole and friable formations enlargingthe borehole.A series of caliper logs may also show increasesor decreases in bore

11、hole diameter with time.1.3 This guide is restricted to mechanically based deviceswith spring-loaded arms,which are the most common calipersused in caliper logging with geotechnical applications.1.4 This guide provides an overview of caliper logging,including general procedures,specific documentatio

12、n,calibra-tion and standardization,and log quality and interpretation.1.5 This guide is to be used in conjunction with GuideD5753.1.6 This guide should not be used as a sole criterion forcaliper logging and does not replace professional judgment.Caliper logging procedures should be adapted to meet t

13、heneeds of a range of applications.Information in this guide isstated in general terms so that flexibility or innovation is notsuppressed.1.7 UnitsThe values stated in SI units are to be regardedas standard.The values given in parentheses are mathematicalconversions to inch-pound units,which are pro
