6、n for Kerosine3.Summary of Test Method3.1 The kerosine number of unsaturated(dry)felt is com-puted from the weight of a kerosine of known specific gravityretained by the felt after displacement of the air from interiorvoids.It is the millilitres of kerosine held/100 g of felt,andthus,is a measure of
7、 the quantity of saturant that a given feltwill absorb.4.Significance and Use4.1 The ability to absorb kerosine is an indication of theability to absorb hot asphalt.The kerosine number is used incalculating saturation efficiency.5.Apparatus5.1 Glass Vessel,approximately 1500 mL capacity,forsoaking s
8、pecimens of felt in kerosine,under vacuum.5.2 Vacuum Pump,capable of reaching and maintaining avacuum of at least 700 mm Hg in the glass vessel.5.3 Lightweight Glass or Metal Weighing Container,withtightly fitting cover,60 by 140 mm 2.5 by 5.5 in.or larger,tocontain felt strips in a horizontal posit

14、8-2959.United States1 9.Procedure9.1 Place a set of strips in the tared weighing container andexpose them,uncovered,for at least 1 but not more than 2 h inan oven,the interior of which is maintained at a temperature of105 6 3C.Keep the felt strips flat.Do not fold,roll,or distortthem in any way.Hand
15、le the six strips as a unit in all of thefollowing operations.9.2 Remove the strips in the weighing container from theoven and place them,with the container still uncovered,in adesiccator to cool.9.3 After cooling,rapidly close the container and weigh itwith enclosed strips to the nearest 10 mg to o
16、btain the netweight of the dry strips.9.4 Insert a wire hook in one corner of the strips andimmerse them at once in a vertical position in 1000 mL ofkerosine at 25 6 1C in the glass vacuum vessel.Apply avacuum of at least 700 mm Hg to the vessel containing thestrips and hold it under these conditions for 15 min or for 5 minafter the bubbles cease to come from the felt strips,whicheverperiod is longer.Remove the felt strips from the kerosine andlet them drain in the machine direction of the felt
