3、the determination of theamount of engine oil volatilized at 371C(700F).This testmethod is applicable to engine oils containing high molecularweight components that need not elute from a gas chromato-graphic column.1.1.1 This test method can also be used to determine theamount of oil volatilized at a

7、thod3.1 The sample is mixed with an internal standard and adilute tetracosane solution,and injected into a gas chromato-graph.The column temperature is raised at a reproducible rateand the area under the chromatogram is recorded throughoutthe run.The retention time(RT)at 371C(700F)is calculatedusing
8、 linear regression,utilizing the n-paraffins comprising theinternal standard and the tetracosane retention time/boilingpoint data.The area response(area/g)of the internal standardis related to the area of the sample determined to the 371C RTto obtain the mass percentage of oil volatilized at 371C.4.
9、Significance and Use4.1 The determination of engine oil volatility at 371C(700F)is a requirement in some lubricant specifications.4.2 This test method is intended to give a more precisemeasurement of oil volatility than that obtainable using theNoack method.44.3 This test method can be used on lubri
10、cant products notwithin the scope of Test Method D 2887.5.Apparatus5.1 Chromatograph,any gas chromatograph can be usedthat has the following characteristics:5.1.1 Oven,a column oven having high-temperature(400C/752F)capability is required.5.1.2 Detector,a flame ionization detector capable of con-tin
11、uous operation at temperatures of 405C(761F)is required.5.1.3 Column Temperature ProgrammerThe chromato-graph must be capable of reproducible linear temperatureprogramming over the temperature range required for the testmethod.5.1.4 Sample Inlet SystemThe sample inlet system mustprovide for on-colum
12、n injection or equivalent such as program-mable splitless injection.5.1.5 Column,12 m by 0.53 mm by 0.15 m nonpolar,carborane modified polydimethylsiloxane bonded phase col-umn or equivalent that can withstand the high column oventemperature employed,and meets the resolution requirementsstipulated i
