3、tile organic compounds(VOCs)inambient,indoor,and workplace atmospheres.The test methodis based on the collection of whole air samples in stainless steelcanisters with specially treated(passivated)interior surfaces.1.2 For sample analysis,a portion of the sample is subse-quently removed from the cani
4、ster and the collected VOCs areselectively concentrated by adsorption or condensation onto atrap,subsequently released by thermal desorption,separated bygas chromatography,and measured by a low resolution massspectrometric detector.This test method describes proceduresfor sampling into canisters to
5、final pressures both above andbelow atmospheric pressure(respectively referred to as pres-surized and subatmospheric pressure sampling).21.3 This test method is applicable to specific VOCs thathave been determined to be stable when stored in canisters(seeTable 1).Numerous compounds,many of which are
6、 chlori-nated VOCs,have been successfully tested for storage stabilityin pressurized canisters(1-4).3Information on storage stabilityis also available for polar compounds(5-7).This test methodhas been documented for the compounds listed in Table 1 andperformance results apply only to those compounds
7、.A labora-tory may determine other VOCs by this test method aftercompletion of verification studies that include measurement ofrecovery as specified in 5.7 and that are as extensive asrequired to meet the performance needs of the customer and thegiven application.1.4 The procedure for collecting the
8、 sample involves the useof inlet lines,air filters,flow rate regulators for obtainingtime-integrated samples,and in the case of pressurizedsamples,an air pump.Typical long-term fixed location canistersamplers have been designed to automatically start and stop thesample collection process using elect
9、ronically actuated valvesand timers(8-10).Temporary or short-term canister samplersmay require the user to manually start and stop samplecollection.A weatherproof shelter may be required if thesampler is used outdoors.For the purposes of this test method,refer to Practice D1357 for practices and pla
10、nning ambientsampling events.1.5 The organic compounds that have been successfullymeasured single-digit micrograms per cubic metre(g/m3(orsingle digit parts-per-billion by volume(ppbv)concentrationwith this test method are listed in order of approximateretention time in Table 1.The test method is ap
11、plicable to VOCconcentrations ranging from the detection limit to approxi-mately 1000 g/m3(300 ppbv).Above this concentration,smaller sample aliquots of sample gas may be analyzed orsamples can be diluted with dry ultra-high-purity nitrogen orair or equivalent.1.6 The values stated in SI units are t
