4、 to complement the more sophisti-cated quantitative analytical techniques that should be used todetermine waste composition and compatibilities.This stan-dard offers the user the option and the ability to screen wastesfor potentially hazardous reactions when the more sophisti-cated techniques are no

5、t available and the total waste compo-sition is unknown,and to screen compatibility when thecomposition is known.(WarningDelayed or slow reactionsof wastes may go unnoticed.)1.4 The values stated in SI units are to be regarded asstandard.No other units of measurement are included in thisstandard.1.4

10、Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 screeningapreliminaryqualitativeorsemi-quantitative test,developed from classical qualitative andquantitative techniques,that is designed to efficiently give theuser specific information about a waste that will aid indetermining waste identification,process comp

11、atibility,andsafety in handling.4.Summary of Practices4.1 Practice ARepresentative samples of waste are addedto each other.The generation of heat or violent reaction isnoted.In addition,the production of mists,fumes,dusts,gases,layering,polymerization,precipitation,emulsification or in-crease in vis

12、cosity,and other chemical or physical changes arenoted.4.2 Practice BReactivity of wastes is determined byadding an aliquot of a sample to an equal volume of reagentand observing any characteristic reaction,such as temperatureincrease,gas evolution,gelling,or polymerization.4.3 Practice CWater and t

13、he waste are mixed in anapproximate 10+1 ratio to test for compatibility.A thermom-eter is used to measure heat generation when applicable.Qualitative solubility and relative apparent density are ob-served concurrently.1These practices are under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D34 on WasteManagem
