7、e for obtaining qualita-tive comparison of spray patterns of aerosol products.2.Summary of Practice 2.1 The comparison is based on the impingement of the spray on a piece of paper that has been treated with a dye-talc mixture.A 5%mixture of the dye in talc is brushed onto a 60-lb(27-kg)vellum paper
8、stock.A small,but known,burst of spray is allowed to impinge upon the treated paper.Whenever the particles strike the paper,the dye goes into solution and is absorbed.The size of the dye spots are in direct relation to the size of the liquid particles when they come in contact with the paper,3.Signi
9、ficance and Use 3.1 The spray pattern technique is particularly useful for comparing spray characteristics obtained with different valve,actuators,and formulations.3.2 The spray pattern technique is rapid,and can be easily done and visually evaluated at a low cost.4.Apparatus 4.1 Motor,a-c,/a-hp(124
10、-W),1725r-pm,60-Hz,11 5-V.2 4.2 Torque Converter,variable speed.3 4.3 Connecting Rod,1 in.(25 mm)in diameter by 4 in.(102 mm)long,to connect the torque converter to the disk.4.4 Rotafing Disk,stainless steel or aluminum,l/l6 in,(1.6 mm)thick,53/4 in.(146 mm)in radius,with a pie-shaped cut-out radial

14、f the spray.A small slit width and high rate of revolution permit only a small amount of spray to pass,while a large slit width and slow rate of revolution permit a large amount of spray to pass.4.5 Mounting Board.5.Materials 5.1 Dye,soluble in spray particles.In the case of alcoholic spray(for exam
15、ple,hair spray),a water-soluble dye must be useds4 In the case of oil-soluble sprays(for example,insecti-cides),an oil-soluble dye must be used.5 5.1.1 Patterns made from aerosols containing fast-drying solvents can be kept indefinitely and can serve as permanent records,Patterns made from aerosols
16、containing oils or solvent that dry slowly change with time and must be photographed for permanent record,since the slow or non-drying oil with dissolved dye gradually spreads in the paper and distorts the pattern originally obtained.5.2 Vellum Paper Stock.6.Calculation 6.1 To obtain the exact amount of material sprayed from the container,it is necessary to know the rate of rotation of the disk,the dimensions of the cut-out sector,and the delivery rate of the valve.6.2 Calculate the exact number
