2、eses indicates the year of last reapproval.Asuperscript epsilon(e)indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of deliveredmass of aerosol products.1.2This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if an

3、y,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory limitations prior to use.For a specificcautionary statement,see the Note in Section 5.2.Significance and Use2.1 Aerosol

4、packaged products are sold by mass,but unlikeconventional standard-pack packages,aerosol packages cannotbe conveniently opened,and puncturing the container must beavoided.An aerosol package should be considered a“system,”rather than simply a package,because the container includes aproduct dispensing

5、 system as well as the product.For thisreason,test procedures require that the packaged productdeliver the labeled mass less a specified test allowance.Theallowance compensates for differences in delivery betweennormal consumer usage and test usage.2.2 Since it is not practicable to have a single te

6、st allowancecovering every product or brand,the products are broken downinto four general classifications,each with similar propertiesand a developed set of test allowances,as follows:(1)non-foodfoam products,(2)food products,(3)low-viscosity products,and(4)high-viscosity products.Examples of produc

7、ts in eachclassification are given in Appendix X1.2.3 Even within classification,there will always be someproducts that may deliver better than others.It is conceivablethat an aerosol packaged product could deliver the statedquantity,within the limits of the test allowance,and still beshort filled o

8、n a dry tare basis.It is emphasized that the testallowance should not be used as justification for packaging lessthan the stated quantity on a dry tare basis.3.Apparatus3.1 Test Stand,lightweight,portable,equipped with anadjustable valve-actuator depressor.3.2 Scale,equal-arm.3.3 Receiving Vessel.4.

9、Test Specimens4.1 The specimens should not be punctured or subjected totemperatures in excess of 110F(43C).4.2 With the exception of refrigerated products,all aerosolpackaged products should be tested at product temperaturesfrom 70 to 80F(21 to 26C).4.3 All refrigerated products should be tested at

10、producttemperatures from 37 to 43F(2.7 to 6C).5.Procedure5.1 Select ten or more specimens identical in labeled mass,brand,and commodity.Remove any overcaps not required fordispensing the product.5.2 Check the gross mass of each specimen to determine thelightest and heaviest specimens,and record the

11、masses.5.3 Shaking ProcedureSelect the lightest specimen.Donot shake unless the label specifies that shaking is required.Ifshaking is specified,shake the container in accordance with thedirections on the container.If no directions are specified,shakethe container as follows:5.3.1 Non-Food Foam and L

12、ow-Viscosity ProductsShakethe container with a wrist-twisting motion for 15 s at theapproximate rate of 1 complete cycle per second.5.3.2 Food Products Shake the container with a wrist-twisting motion for 15 s at the approximate rate of 2 completecycles per second.5.3.3 High-Viscosity ProductsShake

13、the container with abrisk wrist-twisting motion for 1 min at the approximate rate of2 complete cycles per second.If the specimen contains a ballagitator,continue the shaking procedure for 1 min after the ballhas shaken loose.5.4 Exhausting ProcedureThe fumes and suspension offinely divided product i

14、n the air when emptying the containers(particularly those containing high-and low-viscosity prod-ucts)may be toxic,irritating,and flammable.Therefore,conduct the exhausting procedure in a well-ventilated area oroutdoors,as follows:NOTE1Caution:No smoking should be permitted within at least 50ft(15 m
