7、ific gravity is read at themeniscus of the stem and corrected to the desired temperature.4.Significance and Use4.1 This is a test method to determine the specific gravity ofcreosote and creosote-coal tar solutions for conformance toSpecifications D 390 and D 391.It may also be used with otheroil-typ
8、e preservatives.5.Apparatus5.1 HydrometersA set of three hydrometers covering therange 1.000 to 1.150 and conforming to the requirements forhydrometers 125H(range 1.000 to 1.050),126H(range 1.050to 1.100),and 127H(range 1.100 to 1.150)is prescribed inSpecification E 100.If not available,hydrometers(
9、60/60F)inthe range 1.000 to 1.150 of similar accuracy and having a scalelength not less than 9.5 mm/0.010 units of specific gravity,maybe used.5.2 Hydrometer CylinderA glass cylinder having thefollowing approximate dimensions:Lengthapproximately 300 mmDiameternot less than 32 mm5.3 ThermometerAn AST
10、M Low Softening Point Ther-mometer having a range from 2 to 80C(30 to 180F),conforming to the requirements for Thermometer 15C(15F)asdescribed in Specification E 1,or other thermometer of suitablerange and precision.6.Procedure6.1 Place the oil in the cylinder to a depth sufficient to floatthe hydro
11、meter,and with thorough stirring to ensure unifor-mity,adjust the temperature to 38C(100F),or if not entirelyliquid at that temperature,to the lowest temperature at whichthe oil is completely liquid(Note 1).Insert the hydrometer andallow the instrument to settle until it is in floating equilibrium.T
12、hen read the height of the meniscus on the stem of thehydrometer and the temperature to the nearest 0.1C(0.2F).Add to the hydrometer reading an increment of specific gravityequivalent to 1 mm on the scale.Then correct this observedspecific gravity at the observed temperature to the specificgravity a
