3、n an undrainedstate under triaxial compression loading.The test provides datauseful in determining the strength of rock,namely:shearstrengths at various lateral pressures and temperatures,angle ofinternal friction,(angle of shearing resistance),cohesion inter-cept,and Youngs modulus.It should be obs
4、erved that thismethod makes no provision for pore pressure measurements.Thus the strength values determined are in terms of total stress,that is,not corrected for pore pressures.1.2 All observed and calculated values shall conform to theguidelines for significant digits and rounding established inPr

10、e specimen is placed in a triaxial loadingchamber,subjected to confining pressure,and,if required,heated to the desired test temperature.Axial load is continu-ously increased on the specimen until peak load and failure areobtained.4.Significance and Use4.1 Strength of rock is known to be a function
11、of confiningpressure.The triaxial compression test is commonly used tosimulate the stress conditions under which most undergroundrock masses exist.4.2 The strength properties of rock cores measured in thelaboratory usually do not accurately reflect large scale in situproperties because the latter ar
12、e strongly influenced by joints,faults,inhomogeneities,weakness planes,and other factors.Therefore,laboratory values for intact specimens must beemployed with proper judgment in engineering applications.NOTE1Notwithstanding the statements on precision and bias con-tained in this test method;the prec
13、ision of this test method is dependenton the competence of the personnel performing it,and the suitability of theequipment and facilities used.Agencies that meet the criteria of PracticeD 3740 are generally considered capable of competent and objectivetesting.Users of this test method are cautioned
