3、d editorially in May 1995.1.Scope1.1 This test method covers the determination of foots inraw linseed oil.NOTE1Test Method D 1966,is a more reproducible method and canbe used in place of Test Method D 1954 upon mutual agreement betweenthe purchaser and the seller.1.2 The values stated in SI units ar

6、r ASTM Thermometers43.Terminology3.1 Definitions:3.1.1 footsa term that originally was used to describethose solid impurities that precipitate from raw linseed oilduring storage and then settle to the bottom or“foot”of astorage tank.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 footsa mat

7、erial insoluble in a mixture of equal partsof acetone and the oil under test,and insoluble in calciumchloride solution,under specific conditions of the test.4.Summary of Test Method4.1 The oil to be tested is treated by mixing under definedconditions with an acid-calcium chloride solution and aceton

8、e.This mixture is allowed to settle in a graduated tube and thefoots content is determined volumetrically.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method provides an empirical measure of theamount of solid impurities present in raw linseed oil.Theimpurities are usually suspended in the oil.Addition of th

9、ereagents stratifies the impurities in a layer that is measuredvolumetrically.After addition of the reagents,a period of timeis provided to allow the impurities to stratify.The test methodis empirical since the volume of the impurity stratum willincrease over a period of time due to the hydration of

10、 theimpurities.5.2 After heating a sample of the oil to 65C,it is dividedinto two parts.One part is cooled to about 25C and the otherto 0C before the test is run.The test results run on the twosamples are known as the heated foots and chilled footsrespectively.6.Apparatus6.1 Beakers,150-mL,made of c

11、hemically resistant glass.6.2 ThermometerAnASTM Partial Immersion Thermom-eter having a range from 20 to+150C and conforming tothe requirements for Thermometer 1C as prescribed in Speci-fication E 1.6.3 Sample Bottles,60-mL(2-oz).6.4 Graduated Cylinders,10 and 25-mL.6.5 Graduated TubeA buret or colo
