9、hod describes the analytical measurementof residual matter in solvents that are intended to be 100%volatile at 105 C 6 5 C.Volatile solvents are used in themanufacture of paint,varnish,lacquer,and other relatedproducts,and the presence of any residue may affect theproduct quality or efficiency of th
10、e process.This test method isuseful in manufacturing control and assessing compliance withspecifications.4.Apparatus4.1 Oven,thermostatically controlled at 105 C 6 5 C.4.2 Dish,evaporating,platinum,125-mL.A platinumevaporating dish is preferred.Alternatively,an aluminum orporcelain dish may be used(

15、.Hazards5.1 WarningCertainsolventsandchemicalintermediates,particularly,but not only ethers and unsaturatedcompounds,may form peroxides during storage.These perox-ides may present a violent explosion hazard when the chemi-cals are evaporated.When peroxide formation is likely becauseof chemical type
16、or length of storage time,analyze the materialfor peroxides(see Test Method E299).If they exist in hazard-ous concentrations,take appropriate precautions such as de-stroying the peroxides before evaporation,shielding,or dis-posal of the sample and not running the test.6.Procedure6.1 Dry a 125-mL platinum evaporating dish in an oven at105 C 6 5 C,cool in a desiccator,and weigh.Repeat untilthe weight is within 0.1 mg of the previous weighing.6.2 With the graduated cylinder,measure 100 mL of sample
