3、grade carbon blacks by the use of a four-characternomenclature system.The first character gives some indicationof the influence of the carbon black on the rate of cure of atypical rubber compound containing the black.The secondcharacter gives information on the average surface area of thecarbon blac
4、k.The last two characters are assigned arbitrarily.1.2 All rubber-grade carbon blacks for which a number iscurrently assigned at the time of publication of this classifica-tion system are listed in Table 1 together with some of theirtypical properties.ASTM classification numbers(“N”or“S”designation)

11、 typical rubber compoundcontaining the black.The letter“N”is used to indicate a normalcuring rate typical of furnace blacks that have received nospecial modification to alter their influence on the rate of cureof rubber.The letter“S”is used for channel blacks or forfurnace blacks that have been modi
12、fied to effectively reducethe curing rate of rubber.Channel blacks characteristicallyimpart a slower rate of cure to rubber compounds.Thus,theletter“S”designates a slow cure rate.Blacks may varyconsiderably in“curing rate”within each of the two letterclassifications.1This classification system is un
