10、an enclosed chamber topermit free settling of fog on all specimens.The temperature ofthe chamber is usually maintained at 38C(100F).Theexposure condition is varied by selecting the duration of thetest.Water permeates the coating at rates that are dependentupon the characteristics of the coating.Any
11、effects such ascolor change,blisters,loss of adhesion,softening,or embrittle-ment are observed and reported.4.Significance and Use4.1 Water can cause the degradation of coatings,so knowl-edge of how a coating resists water is helpful in predicting itsservice life.Failure in water fog tests may be ca
12、used by anumber of factors,including a deficiency in the coating itself,contamination of the substrate,or inadequate surface prepara-tion.The test is therefore useful for evaluating coatings aloneor complete coating systems.4.2 Water fog tests are used for research and development ofcoatings and sub
