3、a analyses can be used to develop models for the evaluationof the long-term alteration behavior of materials used inengineered barrier system(EBS)for the disposal of spentnuclear fuel(SNF)and other high-level nuclear waste in ageologic repository.The alteration behavior of waste forms andEBS materia

4、ls is important because it affects the retention ofradionuclides within the disposal system either directly,as inthe case of waste forms in which the radionuclides are initiallyimmobilized,or indirectly,as in the case of EBS containmentmaterials that restrict the ingress of groundwater or the egress

5、of radionuclides that are released as the waste forms degrade.1.2 Thepurposeofthispracticeistoprovideascientifically-based strategy for developing models that can beused to estimate material alteration behavior after a repositoryis permanently closed(that is,the post-closure period)becausethe timesc

6、ales involved with geological disposal precludedirect validation of predictions.1.3 This practice also addresses uncertainties in materialsbehavior models and the impact on the confidence in the EBSdesign criteria,the scientific bases of alteration models,andrepository performance assessments using

7、those models.Thisincludes the identification and use of conservative assumptionsto address uncertainty in the long-term performance of mate-rials.1.3.1 Steps involved in evaluating the performance of wasteforms and EBS materials include problem definition,labora-tory and field testing,modeling of in

8、dividual and coupledprocesses,and model confirmation.1.3.2 The estimates of waste form and EBS material perfor-mance are based on models derived from theoreticalconsiderations,expert judgments,and interpretations of dataobtained from tests and analyses of appropriate analogs.1.3.3 For the purpose of

9、 this practice,tests are categorizedaccording to the information they provide and how it is usedfor model development,support,and use.These tests mayinclude but are not limited to:accelerated tests,attribute tests,characterization tests,confirmation tests,and service conditiontests.1.4 This standard

10、 does not purport to address all of thesafety concerns,if any,associated with its use.It is theresponsibility of the user of this standard to establish appro-priate safety and health practices and determine the applica-bility of regulatory requirements prior to use.1.5 This international standard wa
