2、s the year of last reapproval.A superscript epsilon()indicates an editorial change since the last revision or reapproval.1.Scope1.1 This specification covers the material characteristics,physical requirements,and sampling appropriate to the selec-tion of slate for use as roof shingles.1.2 Slates not

3、 included in this specification are those con-taining soft carbonaceous ribbons.The wide variation inphysical properties and composition of such ribbon slatesrender their service life uncertain under some conditions ofuse.1.3 The values stated in either SI units or inch-pound unitsare to be regarded

6、rminology C119.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 service lifea period of time over which the slatematerial is expected to require no repair or replacement due toweathering.3.2.2 ribbonsnarrow bands of carbonaceous material,darker in color than the surrounding slate.These ribbo

7、ns areinclusions of the original beds and are softer and less durablethan the surrounding material.4.Classification4.1 Roofing slate shall be classified by grade in accordancewith the physical requirements of Table 1,with the classifica-tion limited to the test specimen thickness,or greater thicknes

8、s,as determined under Test Methods C120/C120M.4.2 When comparing slates of the same grade and equalthickness,but from various sources,slates which meet therequired breaking load at the lowest specimen thickness willyield the best performance on the roof in terms of resistance toimpact damage.4.3 Exp

9、ected service life of the various grades,dependingon geographic location and environmental exposure,is asfollows:GradeService Life(years)Grade S1over 75Grade S240 to 75Grade S320 to 405.Ordering Information5.1 ColorThe commercial color specified should be pre-ceded by the words“unfading”or“semi-weat

10、hering”or“weathering”to indicate the allowable change in the originalslate color,over time,upon exposure on the roof.5.2 Standard RoofsSloping roofs utilizing a nominalthickness of14in.6 mm,are known as standard roofs.Theseshingles shall be rectangular unless otherwise specified.Theseshingles shall

11、be machine punched or drilled for two nailslocated for the required headlap and installation methods.5.3 Textural RoofsSloping roofs utilizing various sizes,thicknesses,textures,and colors for architectural effects,areknown as textural roofs.These shingles shall be machinepunched or drilled for two

12、nails located for the requiredheadlap and installation methods.5.4 Graduated RoofsSloping roofs utilizing a greaterrange of sizes,thicknesses,and exposed lengths of shingles,are known as graduated roofs.The slates are arranged on theroof so that the thickest and longest occur at the eaves andgradual

16、 under this specification shall conform tothe physical requirements listed in Table 1 and be no thinnerthan the thickness of the average of the test samples reportedunder Test Methods C120/C120M.6.2 Slates with broken corners on the exposed ends shall notbe installed when either the base or leg of the right triangularpiece broken off is greater than 112in.40 mm.Slates withbroken corners are acceptable for cutting stock.6.3 The curvature of shingles shall not exceed18in.in 12 in.3 mm in 300 mm.Cu
