9、e taken toprevent indiscriminate water from coming in contact with theinsulation.4.Significance and Use4.1 Insulations that are used as a part of the thermalinsulation system in contact with austenitic stainless steelshave the potential to become contaminated with water solublecorrosive ions which,i

10、n turn,if permitted to reach the stainlesssteel surface,are possible to contribute to external stresscorrosion cracking(ESCC).Therefore,it is important to reducethe exposure of such insulating materials to water-solublecorrosive ion compounds at all stages of manufacture,handling,shipping,storage,an

11、dapplication.Duringmanufacture,precautions shall be taken to minimize watersoluble corrosive ion content,both in the material and assurface contamination.Once the manufacture is complete,caremust be exercised during handling,transporting,shipping,storage,receiving,and application to avoid contaminat

12、ion withcorrosive ions that can be transported by water through theinsulation materials onto the stainless steel surface.Thispractice presents criteria which,if followed,will minimize therisks of ESCC associated with the application of insulationmaterials.It must be emphasized,however,that because o

13、f themany variable factors present,complete freedom from ESCCcan not be assured under all circumstances,even when follow-ing the guidance of this practice.1This practice is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee C16 on ThermalInsulation and is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee C16.20 on Ho

16、ainlesssteel surface from moisture and contamination after the insu-lation system is installed and over its entire service life is ofsignificant importance.In-service contamination has the poten-tial to occur from many sources;for example,from airbornecontaminates,rain or salt spray,periodic fire sprinkler systemtests,wash-downs,or process leakage.Weather barrier jacket-ing systems and proper application shall be chosen to providelong-term protection in the intended use environment.4.3 The entir
