9、uring methods is not to providedimensional specifications for width characteristics,but rathercommon procedure(s)for quantifying width values.For deter-mining compliance with width specifications,references areprovided to appropriate ASTM standards.4.Apparatus4.1 Calipers used for width measurement
10、shall be con-structed with parallel blades so the sheet can be placed betweenthem for measurement.The outside blades of a caliper are usedto measure the width of steel sheet;inside blades of a caliperare used to measure internal dimensions of non-sheet products.Calipers can be electrical digital,dia
11、l or analog with vernierscale,as shown in the photographs.See Fig.1 and Fig.2.4.2 Unlock the caliper and if electrical digital,turn it on.4.3 Clean caliper blades prior to use.Place cleaningmaterial,such as clean dry paper,lint-free cloth,or fabric(notabrasive such as sandpaper)on the outside blades
12、 and wipeclean.Repeat until the caliper is clean.Usually once or twiceis adequate.4.4 The typical method to hold or secure the caliper is tograsp the caliper,as shown in Fig.3,with right hand and thesheet in left hand.4.5 Close the caliper by rotating the thumb wheel or slidingthe movable blade towa
13、rd the fixed blade.The caliper isacceptable for use if it reads zero.If not,for electronic digitalcalipers,zero out(reset)the caliper per manufacturers instruc-tions.For dial and vernier calipers,adjust them to read zero permanufacturers instructions.NOTE1Mechanical calipers are sensitive to use and
