5、ned.Thickness,weight andarea are measured and the density is calculated and reported.4.Significance and Use4.1 Density is an important property of a gasket material,since it has an inverse relationship to the void volume of thematerial.Density is often used in a specification,since rela-tionships to

6、 sealability,compressibility,creep relaxation,andtensile strength can be found for a given gasket grade.4.2 Density is a measurement of the mass to the volumeratio and therefore easily determined with a weight scale andthickness measuring device.This test method requires from 1h to two days of sampl

7、e conditioning,which is necessary toachieve a high level of precision,but which detracts from itsusefulness as a production test method.Where it must bemodified for manufacturing control,it is recommended thatthickness and weight measurement methods be adhered tostrictly.5.Interferences5.1 Moisture

8、adds to the weight of most gasket specimens,and may cause the material to swell.Proper conditioning of thespecimen should control moisture as a variable.6.Apparatus6.1 ThicknessA thickness measurement device actuatedby a dead weight load as specified in Table 1.The presser footshall be 6.40 6 0.13 m

9、m(0.252 6 0.005 in.)in diameter.Thedevice shall be capable of reading within 1%of the thicknessbeing measured.The anvil shall have a diameter not less thanthat of the presser foot.6.2 WeightAn analytical balance accurate to 61%of thespecimen weight.7.Specimen Conditioning7.1 Specimen shall be condit

10、ioned in accordance with theirclassification as specified in Classification System F104 priorto testing.8.Test Specimen8.1 Three specimens are to be measured.8.2 Specimen size and shape is left to the discretion of thetester.In no case,however,should the area of the specimen beless than 25 cm2(4 in.

11、2).The area of the specimen shall bemeasured accurate to 61%.For this reason a die cut specimenis required.9.Procedure9.1 Remove the specimens one at a time from the condi-tioning chamber if not in a properly conditioned room,andweigh on the analytical balance,recording the weight.9.2 Measure area o
