3、emsof heavy-duty engines.When concentrates are used at 40 to60%propylene-glycol concentration by volume in water ofsuitable quality(see Appendix X1),or when prediluted aque-ous propylene-glycol-base engine coolants(50 volume%minimum)are used without further dilution,it will functioneffectively durin
4、g both winter and summer to provide protec-tion against corrosion,cavitation,freezing,and boiling.1.2 This specification is intended to cover the requirementsfor engine coolants prepared from virgin or recycled propyleneglycol.1.3 Both concentrated and prediluted products are coveredby this specific
5、ation.1.4 Coolant concentrates meeting this specification do notrequire any addition of supplemental coolant additive(SCA)until the first maintenance interval when a maintenance dose ofSCA is required to continue protection in certain heavy dutyengine cooling systems,particularly those of the wet cy
6、linderliner-in-block design.The SCA additions are defined by andare the primary responsibility of the engine manufacturer orvehicle manufacturer.If they provide no instructions,followthe SCA suppliers instructions.1.5 This specification does not cover extended serviceinterval coolants.1.6 The values

10、and Light-Duty Service33.General Requirements3.1 Concentrated coolant shall meet all of the requirementsof Specification D 5216.Prediluted coolant shall meet all therequirements of Specification D 6257.3.2 The coolant concentrate mixed with water or the predi-luted coolant,when maintained with maint
11、enance doses ofSCAin accordance with the engine manufacturers recommen-dations,shall be suitable for use in a properly maintainedcooling system in normal service for a minimum of one year(see Appendix X1).4.Additional Requirements4.1 The coolant concentrate additionally shall provide pro-tection in
12、operating engines against cavitation corrosion,alsotermed liner pitting,and against scaling of internal engine hotsurfaces.Hot surfaces typically are within the engine head,head spacer,or liquid cooled exhaust manifold.ASTM has testmethods under development for both cavitation corrosion andhot surfa
13、ce scaling.Until these procedures are approved asASTM Standards,the mandatory requirements of Annex A1shall apply.4.2 Both the concentrated and prediluted coolants shallcontain less than 50 ppm sulfate ion.4.3 Concentrated coolant must contain less than 4%totaldissolved solids as measured using Modi
