5、efer toTerminology D8.3.2 Definitions of Terms Specific to This Standard:3.2.1 bituminous-aggregate applicationsapplications ofemulsified asphalt to a prepared aggregate base or pavementsurface followed by the application of aggregate.3.2.2 bituminous-aggregate mixturesa combination ofemulsified asp

6、halt and aggregate that is physically mixed bymechanical means,spread on the job site,and compacted.3.2.3 bituminous applicationsthe application of sprayedemulsified asphalt not involving the use of aggregates.3.2.4 graded aggregate seal,na single surface treatmentin which the aggregate is graded wi

7、th little or no mineral filler,typically with a nominal maximum size of about 19 mm,andcontaining sufficient sand that the emulsified asphalt will berequired to penetrate upward into the aggregate cover;thenominal maximum aggregate size may vary depending on thecourse thickness desired and aggregate

8、 availability.It is anapplication method used in lieu of a chip seal to provide alower cost road.3.2.4.1 DiscussionIn this case,nominal maximum sizerefers to the definition in Terminology D8.3.2.5 multiple surface treatmenttwo or more single sur-face treatments placed one on the other.The maximumagg

9、regate size of each successive treatment is usually one halfthat of the previous one,and the total thickness is about thesame as the nominal maximum size aggregate particles of thefirst course.3.2.6 pavement bases and surfacesthe lower or underly-ing pavement course atop the subbase or subgrade and

10、the topor wearing course.Cold-laid mixtures that are bound togetherwith emulsified asphalts use either open or dense aggregategradations.3.2.7 sanda mineral aggregate material consisting of par-ticles of rock passing a 4.75-mm sieve and only about 5%passing the 75-m sieve.3.2.8 sand seala bituminous

11、-sand application to an exist-ing pavement surface to seal the surface and to function as alight-wearing course.3.2.9 sandy soila material consisting essentially of fineaggregate particles smaller than 2.00-mm sieve and usuallycontaining material passing a 75-m sieve.This materialusually exhibits pl

12、asticity characteristics.3.2.10 single-surface treatment(chip seal)a wearing sur-face of emulsified asphalt and aggregate in which the aggregateis placed uniformly over the applied emulsified asphalt in asingle layer,the thickness of which approximates the nominalmaximum size of the aggregate used.3
