3、 of the amountof water absorbed by leather at 23 6 2C by immersion understatic conditions.It may be used on all types of leather,but isparticularly adapted to vegetable-tanned sole leather.This testmethod does not apply to wet blue.1.2 This standard does not purport to address all of thesafety conce

6、ured at room temperature with allsurfaces exposed to water.5.Significance and Use5.1 This test method is currently used to determine compli-ance with specifications for water absorption of impregnatedsole leather.The significance of the test method is limited bythe static conditions employed,and the

7、 results do not reflect thewater absorption under the dynamic conditions of flexing.Theresult may be corrected,if required,for any water-solublematerial removed from the leather during the test.6.Apparatus6.1 Immersion Dish,glass or other noncorrosive material,having a flat bottom at least 3 by 5 in

8、.(76 by 127 mm).6.2 Balance,sensitive to 0.01 g.6.3 Steel Scale or Tape,conforming to the requirements inSection 2 of Test Method D1516.6.4 Thickness Gage,conforming to the requirements inSection 3 of Test Method D1813.6.5 Blotting Paper or Filter Paper.6.6 Drying Oven.6.7 Pieces of Glass Rod,for su

9、pporting and weighting thespecimen.6.8 Crystallizing Dish,borosilicate glass,50 mm tall,70mm in outside diameter.7.Test Specimen7.1 The test specimen shall be a rectangle of leatherapproximately 2 by 4 in.(51 by 102 mm).7.2 Unless otherwise specified in the detail specification,one specimen from eac

10、h test unit of sample shall be tested.8.Procedure8.1 Determine the length,width,and thickness of thespecimen in accordance with Test Method D1516 and TestMethod D1813.Calculate its volume in cubic centimetres.8.2 Weigh the specimen to the nearest 0.01 g and record thismass as W1.8.3 Place the specim

11、en in the immersion dish in a horizontalposition with the grain side up.Support it on glass rods orbeads and weighted with pieces of glass rod to keep itimmersed.Carefully pour distilled water at 23 6 2C into thedish until the specimen is fully immersed,using at least 10 g ofwater per gram of specim

12、en.1This test method is under the jurisdiction of ASTM Committee D31 on Leatherand is the direct responsibility of Subcommittee D31.07 on Physical Properties.Thistest method was developed in cooperation with the American Leather ChemistsAssn.(Standard Method E30 1956).Current edition approved May 1,

15、 the speci-men and blot the surface water with filter paper.Weigh thespecimen immediately to the nearest 0.01 g and record thismass as W2.8.6 If a further immersion time is required,reimmerse thespecimen after it has been in the air for a total of 5 min,including the weighing time.The total immersio

16、n shall beconsidered to exclude these 5-min weighing periods.8.7 If a correction is required for water-soluble materialremoved during the immersion period,proceed as follows:Atthe end of any immersion period stir the water in the immersiondish thoroughly,transfer it to a beaker,and weigh to the nearest0.1 g.Record the total mass of the water as Ww.Take an aliquotof 25 mL of the water from the beaker,put it in weighed tannindish,and dry at 105C.Weigh the tannin dish and residue anddetermine the m
