9、tio n abou tthe steels included i n thi s survey.In March,1950,th e America n Society for Testin gMaterials publishe d a repor t o n Th e Strengt h o fWrought Steel s a t Elevate d Temperatures,SpecialTechnical Publication No.100.The data in this reportwere collected by R.F.Miller and J.J.Heger and

10、madeavailable t o th e Dat a an d Publication s Pane l o f th eASTM-ASME Joint Gommittee on Effec t o f Tempera-ture on the Properties of Metals.Thi s report contain sdata for ferritic and austenitic steels and was intendedby th e Dat a and Publication s Pane l t o supply much-needed informatio n un

11、ti l th e presen t surve y reportsbecame available.On May 19,1950,a letter requesting information onthe stainless steels was sent out by Mr.Ernest L.Robin-son,Chairma n of the ASTM-ASME Join t Committe eon Effec t o f Temperature o n th e Propertie s o f Metals.Since this letter contain s th e compl

12、et e backgroun d ofthis survey in concise language,it is reproduced below:The ASTM-ASM E Join t Committe e o n th e Effec t o lTemperature on the Properties o f Metals has been requeste dby the Boile r Cod e Committee of The America n Societ y ofMechanical Engineers,th e Prim e Mover s Committee o f

13、 th eEdison Electri c Institute,th e Committe e on Powe r Genera-tion o f th e Associatio n o f Ediso n Illuminatin g Companies,and the Air Force to compile high-temperature data on vari-ous metals an d alloy s used a t elevate d tempeartures.Th eCivil Aeronautic s Administratio n o f th e Departmen

14、 t o fCommerce,th e Researc h an d Developmen t Board,an d th eAircraft Industrie s Associatio n hav e als o indicate d thei rdesire for a compilation o f this type.In 1938,th e Join t Committe e mad e a compilatio n o fdata then available,which was issued as a Data Book by thesponsor societies,but

15、whic h is now out of print.Durin g th epast 12 years,much additional informatio n has accumulated.The curren t request s fo r a n up-to-dat e compilatio n hav eresulted i n a decisio n b y th e Join t Committe e t o procee dwith a new survey,the results of which will be published b ythe sponso r soc

16、ieties.A s i n th e 193 8 Compilation,th e in-dividual contributor s wil l b e identifie d onl y b y number.Data supplied fo r the 193 8 survey need no t b e resubmitted.While th e Joint Committe e intends eventually to surveythe high-temperatur e propertie s o f al l type s of metals use dfor elevated-temperatur e applications,w e have adopted th epolicy o f limite d objectives an d pla n t o divide th e metal sinto several groups.Informatio n on these materials can thenbe issued as soon a s it
