8、ot and my head was spinning.Truth was,I was worried about the march,and no amount of tossing and turning was going to cure that.We were going to march from Selma all the way to Montgomery,50-something miles down that dusty road,with the sun beating on our backs and a whole lot of people staring us d

9、own.We were marching for the rights of black people to vote.I was a little scared,but I knew we wouldnt be aloneJesse,Momma,Pop,mebecause this time Dr.Martin Luther King,Jr.,was marching and many more people besides,and that made me feel better.We were marching because things needed to change for bl

10、ack people,and if we werent brave,and if we didnt march,then maybe they wouldnt change at all.So what needed to change?Well,if you lived in our neighborhood in Selma,youd know what it was like to be treated differently because of the color of your skin.Jesse explained it much better than me.He alway

13、otect those of us who want to vote,same as everybody else.”He sipped his hot chocolate as I thought this through.“But were allowed to vote,arent we?”I asked.“Sure thing.The law says we can vote,”Jesse said,putting down his bread,“but down here,theres a law that says you cant vote if you dont pass a

16、 in the last world war,to be told which water fountain he drinks from?”“No way!”I said loudly.“Well,today,”Jesse continued,“were marching to make it easier for us to vote and then we can have a say in how things are run,then we can start to change a whole lot more.”Pop laughed,and Momma came over an

17、d hugged Jesse.Then I started believing I was strong enough for the march.I helped Momma clean up the dishes while Jesse and Pop checked on the things we would need.We were going to be on the road for days,so we needed to take bed rolls,some food,something to drink,and extra clothes.“You dont want t

18、o be carrying too much,”said Pop.“A heavy pack is fine at first,but pretty soon,it starts to eat into your shoulders.”He knew from when he was in the war.Momma locked the house,and we stood on the porch together.We all knew this was a day we were going to reminisce about in later years.It was March

20、long the road,was the biggest crowd Id ever seen in Selma.There were all kinds of people going on the march,not just black people.There were plenty of white people too,and others from all around the country.Looking around made me think about the first time a group tried to march from Selma.On the ot

21、her side of the bridge,the sheriff and his men had brought it to a halt.The group had tried to cross the bridge again and were stopped again.Pop could see I was still anxious,and he told me it wasnt going to happen like that this time.“I read in the newspaper that President Johnson has sent down the

24、rd Momma and Pop talk so much about him.I struggled to get a look,and I could just about see him standing on the steps,although there were a whole lot of bodies obscuring my view.Then Dr.King spoke to us.Though I didnt catch everything he said,being way back in the crowdeven with him using a microph

27、,I noticed people wearing garlands of flowers around their necks.Back where we were,some people were carrying flags and others were carrying signs,and like us,many people carried their bed rolls ready for the nights ahead.It felt incredible to be walking in that crowdI just wished I had Jesses way w

28、ith words to describe what it felt like.He said it was an“alliance of truth”we were walking together to show the country that,under the Constitution,we were people with rights,just like them.Thats what Jesse said.Pop was right when he said thered be soldiers on the streets.Right up ahead I saw a jee

29、p leading the way with“Military Police”written on the back.With soldiers there to protect us,there was no way this march would get turned back at the end of that bridge;not like the first two times.“We shall overcome!”Momma sang as she hugged me close.“We shall overcome.”I squeezed her back.CHAPTERC

31、de of the road looking grim and angry.They stood there and yelled hurtful things at usthings I wouldnt want to repeat,things that reminded us why we were marchingbut they didnt do anything else because the army was standing by.I didnt really understand why some people disliked us so much.We were all

32、 just people as far as I could see,but I guess they didnt view us that way.I think that was the problem:because we looked different from them,they didnt consider us real people.Anyway,Pop looked them right in the eye and said,“Adversity will only make us stronger,”and we passed by them without any m

33、ore trouble.Later I thought about what Pop had said.My feet started to ache terribly,and my legs felt like they were made of rubber.Jesse grabbed my pack and threw it over his shoulder,but I reached over and took it right back and said loud enough so that Momma and Pop could hear,“If you can do this

36、ile since he had been a soldier in the army.All around us,people were resting their legs,lying down in the grass,tired but happy.Mostly I saw smiles.Someone had pitched some big tents in the middle of the field for the marchers.Nearby some cows were huddled in a makeshift pen,so I wandered over to t

37、ake a look at them.The cows seemed happy in their confinementnot too concerned that thousands of noisy people had come to share their farm or that there were helicopters buzzing around overhead.They just continued eating,and somehow,I thought this was funny.I went back to the others with a smile on

39、s.“This is the biggest picnic Ive ever seen,”I joked.“This aint no picnic,”Jesse muttered,but even he was too tired to go making speeches.“This crowd is going to get a whole lot smaller soon,Carolyn,”Pop said,sitting up.“The country roads around here are too narrow to take us all,so most of these ma

40、rchers will be catching a ride back to Selma tonight.The judge who gave the order for the march to go ahead said no more than 300 people.”“Three hundred?”I asked.“Cant we smuggle some more people along?”Momma laughed.“Well be fine,and proud were part of the chosen few.”That night,it drizzled with ra

41、in,and I was glad we had brought some extra clothes because it got bitterly cold.The soldiers were there under their green ponchos,and though I knew their job was to guard us,part of me was still scared of them.But it was a good night all the same.We had done well,and I drifted off to sleep to the s

43、e lying in mud and water.The day before had been so amazing,but that morning,I felt like crying.Jesse squeezed me on the shoulder.“Its only rain and mud,after all,”he said as he got up and retrieved his things,getting ready to leave.We scraped together some breakfast,and then we were on the road aga

44、in.As we walked through Lowndes County,it stopped raining and we talked to the people around us.One old man told Momma that he was walking for his grandson.“My boy is too little to walk yet,but one day,I want him to be able to do anything he likes.”The old man waved his walking stick in the air as h

45、e talked.I met another girl,Sarah,who was walking with her aunt who was a friend of Mrs.Rosa Parksthe lady who sat down in the white folks section of the bus and wouldnt move.Sarah said Mrs.Parks did it because she was just tired,but she was arrested,and after that,a whole storm started brewing.That

46、 was what started folks thinking about injustice and discrimination.Speaking of storms,dark clouds started gathering as we walked,and it began pouring with rain again.Night after night,we slept outside.It was tough sleeping on the hard ground.My legs felt like lead.But we kept on marching.CHAPTERCHA

48、Montgomery was next,and there we would march right up to the capitol and give the governor the message we had come all that way to deliverloud and clear.I think we finally knew we would make it,and Jesse was yelling and cheering,along with many others.“Nothings going to stop us now!Montgomery,here w

49、e come!”He squeezed my arm and said,“Youve done really well,little sister,and you havent complained once.”I blushed and tried to speak,but“Thanks!”was all I could manage.Those words of Jesses meant a lot to me.Truth was,up till that night,I just wasnt sure wed make itnot that I said anything like th

50、at to Jesse or Momma or Pop.When youre tired,its tough to keep your spirits up.That night,there were rumors we were going to be treated to something special.Word had spread that the singer Harry Belafonte had arranged a show,and hed brought other famous singers to perform.A stage had been erected an
