、 enough,Mom only sighed and Dad grimaced.“This is hard for all of us,Jacob,”he said quietly.“Weve all been looking forward to WildWorld for a long time.”Jessica nodded. All winter,Jessica had been compiling a list of the rides she wanted to try, starting with Perils Peak, the largest roller coaster in

、Jessica roused herself and rummaged in her desk for a pencil.Taking her journal from its hiding place beneath her mattress, she began another list.Moneymaking Ideas:1)Mow lawns.2)Wash cars(and bikes?).3)Walk dogs and take care of other pets.4)Collect and exchange recyclables. How many bottles and cans

、 would she have to recycle in order to pay for their vacation?Just thinking about the vastness of the task exhausted her.Jessica considered the other options on her list. Most people walked their own dogs unless they were out of town, and no one would be gone until school was out for the break.Only fo

、 drifted off?Jessica sat up with sudden excitement. The phone had definitely rung!Mr.Ross had called to beg Dads forgiveness and offer him a new, better job.Vestra could keep zapping meteors and deep-freezing wolvesher assistance would not be required.Jessica hurriedly called her dad in,but he hadnt c

、to check on us.”“Is she coming to visit soon?”A few days with Aunt Emily and the cousins just might salvage the month. It was almost impossible to be grumpy watching the three-year-old twins perform their made-up dances.“Not that I know of.The fair is coming up,and Im sure shell want to take the twin

、a sleepy place, but thousands of families traveled there each spring for the county fair. When Jessica went, she had won(with Dads help)a stuffed purple gorilla that now resided in Jacobs room. The fair was no WildWorld, but it did have small mechanical rides that whipped you through the air like a bird,

、and there was a tent that sold cotton candy in 15 different flavors. In a moment of inspiration,a brilliant idea sprang into Jessicas mind.“Dad,maybe we could go to the fair for our spring vacation!”Jessicas father paused and removed his glasses,a sign that he was seriously considering her suggestion

、.“Well, its only a three-or four-hour drive from here,so I suppose thats an option,”said Jessicas father.“And we might be able to stay with Aunt Emily, which would certainly save on hotel costs.Weve never taken Jacob to the fair, have we?”“Thats right, and hed love it!”Could this plan actually work?In h

、 selling her comics:Over the years, she had gathered a fairly impressive collection.Maybe she could let them go Jessicas heart beat faster.“This is just an idea, but why dont we have a yard sale?”To Jessicas delight,Dad did not put his glasses back on.“Well,if we did have a yard sale, would you be will

、ing to organize it?”“Yes,yes!”Jessica shouted her excited agreement the moment her father stopped speaking.“Why dont you start by looking through each room and making a list of all of the things we might sell?”“One big list coming right up!”“Im proud of you,Jess,”Dad said, smiling at her warmly.“Ther

、reminded herself to be patient.“Well,if you want to help, you need to listen carefully,so no turning off your hearing aid even if you get mad,”Jessica warned.“I promise!”Jacob nodded vigorously.“Okay, why dont you go into my closet and pull out the clothes in the back?”Jessica figured that if she show

、ed that she was willing to part with some old clothes, maybe Jacob would be equally generous with his old toys.In a little over two weeks,Jessicas list had grown to four full pages. At this rate, she should be able to add another page or two before next Saturdaythe big day.It had taken a surprising amo

、”was the phrase used by Bargain Bob in a maddeningly memorable car commercial that Jacob loved.Anytime Jessica caught herself grumbling about her brothers silliness or groaning with reluctance to clean the bathroom and take out the trash, she took a deep breath and pictured the fair.Aunt Emily had sa

、id she was more than happy to have them stay with her.On Saturday morning,Jessica woke up just after dawn.Lifting her bedroom curtain, she was relieved to see a clear sky.The sale was scheduled to begin at 9 A.M.The night before, her mom and dad had shown her how to make a budget for their week at the

、 fair.Looking at each days expenses, the costs really added up.For a few moments,Jessica doubted if she could raise that much money with the yard sale.Jacob interrupted her thoughts as he called from her doorway,“Is it time to make a deal?”“Just about.Lets start bringing our stuff to the front door.”
