15、o!”she exclaimed.“I already have plans Saturday.How about the next weekend?”Aunt Zandra was too busy feeling happy to decipher the looks Lara and her mom were exchanging.“Oh,fine,”she said.“We can pick another day later.I m going over to Dad s house now so that I can tell him the good news in person
16、.See you!”As soon as Aunt Zandra had gone,Lara grabbed the phone.“We have to call Grandpa,”she said,“and tell him about giving Aunt Zandra a surprise party on Saturdayhe can t accept her invitation to dinner that night!”“Okay,”said Mom,“but remember that Aunt Zandra will want to tell Grandpa the new

30、 I ve been doing for history,”he told Lara,“but I think she saw something.She asked me what I was doing,and I had to think of an alibi super fast!I said I d been distracted by a fun Web site when really I should have been doing my research.”“Did that work?”Lara asked.“I think so,”said Javier.“She of

33、dn t come up with a thing to say!I just started examining a nearby shelf of laundry detergent,of all things!I m glad Elias jumped in.He told her we were helping to shop for a fundraising dinner at the kids school,and then of course Zandra wanted to know how she could help.Luckily,someone else she kn
34、ew came along and started talking,so we quickly said our good-byes.”When Roseanne called Lara on Friday,it was about the decorations that some of the cousins were making.“There we all were,Lara,”Roseanne said,“construction paper,markers,packets of glitter all over the floor,busy making table decorat

45、o sign of anyone.“All right,found them.We can go now.”Aunt Zandra stepped out and pulled the door shut,checking to make sure that it was locked.Lara was glad that Mom had a copy of Aunt Zandra s house key to use in emergencies,and although the party wasn t an emergency,it was a very special event.La
46、ra was relieved to turn the corner and be out of sight of Aunt Zandra s house.Soon they were halfway to the theater,but just as Lara thought everything was going to work out after all,her aunt suddenly stopped.“Oh,no,silly me!”Aunt Zandra said.“Now I ve forgotten my purse,and I don t have any money
