9、iously from every match.“I don t think Lancewood stands a chance,”Ellie says.“They re obviously no match for us.”Tom is too busy reviewing the brief to notice Ellie s sarcastic remark.“Junk food should be banned in schools?I really hope we don t have to argue for that,”he says,smiling and pulling an
10、 immense bag of candy from his backpack.“Excuse me,”Ellie says.“I m confiscating those because the last thing we need is you going into sugar shockyou might freeze up onstage.”I sprint ahead,spooked,the words“freeze up”clattering around in my head.I take some deep breaths and start counting the door

13、me of the Lions,who are already sprawled across the front row of the Den,turn and look in our direction,like predators hungrily eyeing their prey.The Lions coach,Mr.Kite,walks onto the stage.“Welcome to Lancewood,”he says.“No doubt the Colts are looking forward to this exchange as much as the Lions
14、are.”We hear some giggles from the Lions,and Ellie and I exchange anxious looks.“Before we begin,”Coach Kite says,“I d like our squad captains to join Coach Manning and me on the stage.”Our captain,Sam,a tall,outgoing eighth grader,confidently strides up to take his place.As the Lions captain ambles

17、”and we ve been preparing for this moment all week.Ricky and Hannah are reading the flow sheets.“Did you two memorize the NASA research?”I ask them.I want to be sure they re prepared.They look at each other,and I know I m being a nag,but I don t care.They want to win as desperately as I do,and it ll
18、 be my fault if we don t because I m captain.Ricky is about to commence his opening so I lean over as he stands and whisper“Don t rush like last time.”He nods and makes his way to the podium.“Space exploration is the final frontier,and the mystery of the sky has fascinated humans since time immemori

21、icky and I share a secret smile,simultaneously putting our hands up to pounce again.When Hannah gets up,she dominates the stage,decimating the Colts with our finely constructed points and perfectly executed arguments.The next two Colts are mediocre at best:their flow is nonexistent,and when one of t
22、hem tries to crack a joke,you could have heard a pin drop.I almost pity them.When it s my turn,I clash hard against each of the Colts flimsy points,and I can tell that the audience is loving it.Hannah and Ricky are thumping their desks,and all around the chamber,I can see our Lions triumphantly stam
23、ping their feet on the wooden floor.The judges decision is,predictably,that we ve taken the first debate by a landslide.Coach Kite is ecstatic.I peer into the audience,where I see the Colts perched on the edges of their seatsthe sixth graders faces are white with terror.And then I see him.It s Sean.

27、Justin doesn t look very confident,and his teammates appear uneasy.I take a deep breath,and just as I launch in,I see Antonio grinning hugely.“It s okay,”I tell myself.“He hasn t said anything.It s okay.”I try to ignore him,and gradually I find my groove,seeing that the audience is nodding with me,a
28、nd Coach Manning is at the side of the stage,encouraging me with a big smile.I bring up Justin s last point and rebut with the argument that“knowing something can be harmful”is one thing,but“avoiding doing what we know is harmful”is another idea entirely.I m feeling pretty proud as I wrap up my argu

45、ing into me.Justin s the new squad captain for our team,and he and the other Lions are hardly talking to me.You d think I d committed the most heinous crime on Earth.I mean,I apologized in the letter!But deep down,I know that saying sorry isn t enough of aconsolation for what I did.Ricky and Hannah
46、shuffle over.They have to talk to me because we re on the same team,but I can tell they re reluctant to come anywhere near me.They both mutter hello,but they keep their eyes averted.Then the Colts arrive,and my life gets a million times worse.There s nowhere to hide.The heat in the Den is overwhelmi
