9、esting of Metals. It is hoped that future symposia on this subject will benefit from contributions from invited authors from laboratories throughout the world where excellence of electron fractographic usage in research and failure analyses has been proved. As the papers in the volume indicate,a great

14、aphic features of fractures, and from it much new theoreti-cal and applied information regarding the micromechanisms of fractures has been obtained.Prior to the use of electron microscopes, the unaided eye,opti-cal microscopes, and metallographic cross sections were used to study frac-tures.These metho

16、 microprobe analyzers, and scanning and reflection electron microscopes. The combination of all these tools has provided much new infor-mation,but it must be realized that electron microscopy as a tool for studying fractures is still essentially in its infancy, and it offers tremendous opportunities which,as yet, have not been fully explored.KEY WORDS:fractography, fracture, election microscopy Valuable information has long been known to exist in the fracture surfaces of materials, and, through the year
